1991 Sunline T-1550 brakes

Hi! I have a 1991 T-1550 Sunline that came with no brakes when I received it. Wiring is zip tide to the axle. The brake plate is welded to the axle. It has a Hayes axle #11489 86 number on the tag with a 3000 lb rating. I went to my local RV shop and showed them some pics but they couldn't help me. The brakes they sell come with the backing plate that mounts to 4 bolts. I have no bolts on my backing plate. Thanks for any help!

Steve

That is not unusual my 90 T1700 has welded plates try etrailer they are pretty good about finding brake parts I suspect you have 10"X 2 1/4".

What does the old brakes look like? Any pics? Since they were unhooked, if all the parts are there, then you may be able to clean them up and get them working again. The brake pads are a lot thinner than older car drum brake shoes were, so do not let a thin looking lining be a show stopper. They are not that think even new. . The Dexter tolerance to replace shoes is 1/16" of brake lining material.

As Mainah stated, Etrailer may be an option. I have bought a lot from them and had a positive experience, I just have not bought brake parts from them so cannot comment on that.

And here is another option. Axle Inc in Elkhart IN. They are a. Alko/Dexter and Hayes distributor. AXLE Inc. - Towable Trailer Axle Specialists They may have the inside track on the Hayes situation as it was thought they may have gone out of business. Alko may have bought the business.

Axle Inc actually lists some of the Hayes part numbers on their site. But it seems only in the 10 x 2 1/4" brakes. The 10 x 1 3/4 does not list the Hayes parts. You will need to measure the shoes and drum ID width you have now to help hone in on this.

Here is 10" x 1 3/4" brakes http://axleinc.com/axle-inc-document...signbrake2.pdf

Here is 10" x 2 1/4" brakes http://axleinc.com/axle-inc-documents/10x214elec.pdf

I would call them. I have in the past and they are very helpful. I bought my new 6,000# axle tubes from them. They could sell me everything and anything I needed for my Alko Axles.

Worst case, if you cannot clean up the old brakes and get them working, can't buy parts, then an axle conversion is an option. Axle Inc can have whatever you need made up and shipped. My Axle tubes came UPS to my house from them. They were made in about 1 to 2 weeks. You just need to tell them a few dimensions so the spring mount and axle length line up. They will explain how to do this. We can help is needed. Amazingly the axle tubes are not that expensive.

Hope this helps

John

I have managed to find all I have needed for mine except for aftermarket brake magnets Dexter OEM are at least twice the price of similar magnets. When you say "no brakes" is everything missing inside? I have never tried but I'm wondering if the brake parts on a bolt on backing plate are the same as a welded one? If so just use the guts and toss the backing plates.

T 1550 trailer brakes

Thanks for the info. I appreciate it as always. There are no parts whatsoever there. No brake shoes or hardware. All I can think is that they must have locked up or something once and someone took everything off. I have taken some pictures but I can't figure out how to get them from my saved pictures on my computer to post with these messages. If I can figure it out I'll send pics as well. Once again thank you very much for your quick responses!

Hi Steve,

There are few ways on how to get a picture to view on the forum.

1. Attach the pictures from your hard drive to the end of a post. You upload to the post for up to 6 pictures per reply. These pics stay with the post/reply.

2. You can link pics from your online photo server system if you photo server allows 3rd party linking. Once the link it created, they show up here and are stored on your server.

3. You can create your own photo album here on the forum. You upload them to the forum server. These pics can then be seen in your album and you can link them to any of your posts in whatever order you want them in.

This help link will help on method 1 & 2 above. http://www.sunlineclub.com/forums/f1...html#post86041

This help link will drop you into a larger post on how to create your photo album. http://www.sunlineclub.com/forums/f1...html#post87945

If you need more help, ask away. Getting pics to show really help and we are glad to help you get it up and going.

John

Thanks John for all your help. It's good to have a site like this to get answers to questions about our campers.

Hi Steve,

Great pics!!!

A call to Axle Inc may really help in this case. They would know if the parts are available or what they can sell you as a all new fix.

See these 2 older posts I found with pics of what I think yours use to look like when it had all the parts inside.

You may end up needing to get a whole new axle with new brake plates and drums. If these older posts align with yours, the parts were discontinued.

Please post back what you find out and can come up with. This older brake axle issue comes up from time to time and it would sure help others following you if we had some good info on what folks found to correct it.

Yeah you got a whole lot of nothing there. There is no real science there if you can find an axle to fit your suspension any one will do get a controller and hook the wires up.

T 1550 trailer brakes

Thanks guys! What a big help this is. I'll try Axle Inc. first to see if they have anything. Really appreciate your help, especially the pics off that other unit. It looks like the backing plate that is on mine.
Hope you all have a great weekend! Maybe go camping, cause it's gonna be real warm around the Cleveland area this weekend and I hope it's nice for you all as well!

Steve
