Three questions about the Que

Hi,

I just purchased a Que trailer several states away from here. I am planning to drive to pick it up and have three questions.

1. What size is the trailer ball? I use a 2' ball for a boat trailer, but I have a hunch the Que may be more like 2 5/15 or so. Any help?

2. Does the Que have electric brakes, and if so is the connector the 7 pin large connector with flat pins or is it some other connector. I need to wire up the brake controller if it has electric brakes.

3. Finally I have a deep cycle battery with regular clamp top posts like those used in most cars, not the screw terminals like boats use. Is this the correct battery type for the Que?

Thanks much for any help

Dennis

Re: Three questions about the Que

Hi Dennis,

I've posted the answers to your questions in red below the question:

1. What size is the trailer ball? I use a 2' ball for a boat trailer, but I have a hunch the Que may be more like 2 5/15 or so. Any help?

The Que does use a 2 5/16 ball. I am a little surprised about this myself, but I guess it was to make moving trailers around the yard a little easier with having the same size ball across the board.

2. Does the Que have electric brakes, and if so is the connector the 7 pin large connector with flat pins or is it some other connector. I need to wire up the brake controller if it has electric brakes.

The Que does have electric brakes. It uses the standard 7 way connector that many other trailers also use. You will have to wire up a brake controller. I have the Draw Tite Activator II and it's OK, but I'd recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy or some other PROPORTIONAL brake controller. The Activator II is a time based controller and the proportional controllers are a lot better in my opinion. You can find a lot of info on controllers in the towing & tow vehicles forum.

3. Finally I have a deep cycle battery with regular clamp top posts like those used in most cars, not the screw terminals like boats use. Is this the correct battery type for the Que?

Well, the short answer is no. The Que (and any RV for that matter) uses the screw terminals just like boats. The ends of the cables will have small metal connectors with loops on them. They go around the terminal just like in marine applications. You may however use your deep cycle vehicle battery if you get some of those bolt on things that go around the post and have a little threaded part on the other end. If you're buying your Que new, it should already come with a battery from the dealer. If you buy it used, most likely it will also. If I remember correctly (Que owners correct me please), there isn't any room on the tongue for a second battery anyway.

Thanks for the response! I have the Prodigy controller, just have not installed it on the truck. I had a hunch about the other two also. You have verified that I have a bit of work to do before I pick up the trailer this weekend!

Jon is right on all counts. There is not really any room on the tongue for a second battery. We also have the Prodigy and it is a thing of beauty

We have a buddy who has burned out three break controllers. We convinced him to buy the Prodigy last year. It is the longest he has ever had a controller, and it is still going strong!

Well, we picked up our new Que on Saturday the 11th of August. Everything was just as we hoped. The dealer was a Sunline dealer for 5 years, and had nothing but good things to say about Sunline and their employees. The Que pulled relatively easily behind our 2004 Ford Ranger 2WD supercab (tow rating 5850#). We averaged about 14 mpg over the 1500 mile tow. Altitude ranged from 11,000 feet to sea level. We did well in the mountains, although it was over 100 degrees f and steep. We still averaged about 11.5 mpg in the mountains.

Had a great time getting to operate everything for the first time. Our first hookup was at 10:30 PM at a KOA. All worked well until the morning. Turns out I had a small water leak at the city water hose connection that I couldn't see in the dark! A twist of the hose connector fixed that. Not bad for the only problem.

The Prodigy brake controller did a fine job controlling the trailer brakes. We had no problems whatsoever, even in the steep and high Rocky Mountain roads.

By the way the dealer has one new 2007 Que SE left.

Dennis,

Glad to hear you had a successful trip home. Even though it is a Sunline, all RV's have some sort of kinks that need to be worked out and that's amazing if that water leak turns out to be the only issue. I'd be curious to hear your production # (last 4 digits of VIN) and build date as I think a trouble free unit would be very unlikely near the end.

Actually, the water leak was my fault. I didn't get the hose connection tight, and it started to spray a small mist during the night. So far everything has worked perfectly. I even tested the furnace last weekend even though it was in the mid 70's in the evening, just to see if it would light and run. Our build date was actually in March of 2006, and the last 4 digits of the VIN are 6190. The dealer ( Sunline dealer) had it from the factory, along with 6 other Ques. We actually found several Que's by searching the Sunline dealers around the country. We almost purchased one in another state farther East, but found out it had hail damage just as we were negotiatng the final details.

I know most Sunline owners are on the East side, but who knows, we may get out that way with ours. We've made two trips out so far this year, one to Colorado to pick up the Que, and to Indiana in a rented RV to attend a family wedding. After that any trip is possible!

Thanks Dennis, your coach has been added to my collection too. I'd say yours was built just at the right time, before business really started slowing down.
