T-2499 swivel chair replacement

As soon as we got our 2499 last September, I realized the swivel chair had to go. I felt it was too bulky for the space, and not the right seating for a table, which in a 2499 is the only indoor dining space since there's no dinette. I also didn't like the fact that it sat so low (cheap foam) and the arms made it difficult to get in and out of.
So here's my solution, I made a bench with under seat storage that sits at a comfortable height and in a pinch, can accommodate two slim people (or two children). Most of the time it'll be occupied by my wife or myself as we are usually the only ones camping.
Here's the bench:

I tried to get the exact same fabric as the sofa, but even though I was able to get the manufacturer's name and the pattern from flexsteel (the maker of the sofa), after 9 years, it's history. So I decided to use a black vinyl since their are black accents throughout the camper (refrigerator door frames, stove, and background of fabric design) and I stitched in the Sunline sofa design on the backrest.

The door on the side opens for shoe storage:

And the seat lifts off for access to more shoe storage and sheets and blankets for overnight guests who will sleep on the sofa:

Finally, I thought it would be helpful to be able to move closer or further away from the table, so I added tracks which allows about 8" of movement.
The bench weighs about 75 lbs, which is a little more at the back of the trailer, maybe it'll help with the tongue weight!

Awesome job Rich, that looks fantastic, much better then the OEM seat and looks like an original feature.
Great use of storage space too.
Thanks for sharing.

Nice work Rich!! These type of projects are certainly much more fun than rot repair.

Yes they are, besides, a good rot repair job means you don't see any evidence of all the work that went into it!
Thanks,
Rich

Forget the seat .... I want a pair of those slippers in the second picture.

Yes, a really nice job on that seat.

Hi Rich,

Your upholstery skills continue to shine! Great job and really nice solution.

The cabinet door and outer frame, did you make that too?

Thanks for sharing.

Gene, I asked my wife where she got those slippers, she mumbled something about the hundred acre wood? I don't know.

John,
The door is the only part I didn't make, (well, OK, I didn't actually make the seat tracks either) I was snooping around The Habitat Re-store one day and there, in a corner were all these cabinet doors! exactly what I was looking for, this one matched the refrigerator raised panels and is almost a perfect match in color. Size was just right and I think I paid $8.00 for it.
The outer frame I made from birch, stained it and polyurethaned with Minwax satin gloss. I was actually looking for a flatter finish, since satin still has a higher gloss than the cabinet door as well as the cabinets in the camper, but Minwax didn't have anything with that low sheen in their display at Lowes.

Rich,

You scored big time on the doors!!!

On the stain, if you do some mods that need to match the Sunline stain, if you have a Sherwin Williams paint store near by, they will mix custom stain for you. Bring them a piece of bare wood that you are using and a sample of what you want to match, door, drawer etc. I did this from a tip from Tweety and I'm still working down the quart I bought.

I do remember you mentioning that in another post John. I have so many cans of stain in my shop and I needed so little, I decided to try mixing it up.
I was aiming to match the cabinet door which is slightly lighter than the cabinets in the camper and it came out pretty close, but using it on such a close grained wood such as maple is, required multiple coats to get it to be dark enough. The factory panels as well as the door I bought have a more uniform coating than I was able to get, maybe it's the wood they used, but more likely, it's the process they use. I think these commercially stained woods are done either under pressure, or it's a different type of coating that is sprayed on. I'm not sure, but to avoid nit-picking (especially since I don't do this for a living) it looks good.

Fantastic job. I am also looking around to replace my '04 swivel chair also.
Does anyone have a suggestion where I can get some replacement decals for the outside of my '04 Solaris (T2499) as mine are in tough shape ?

I decided I could get more room for shoe storage under the bench by making a slide out drawer rather than the tip-out storage I first tried.
Here's the photo:
