Sofa mod
Well, after a lot of complaining about the sofa being uncomfortable to sit and sleep on, I decided to do somethng about it. DH had open heart surgery last month and has a hard time sleeping on one side-not to mention climbing around the side of the bed in our 2653-and I have a tear in a spinal disc--so we have to use the sofa for awhile at least. With our upcoming three month trip as Snowbirds, and hating the thought of making and un-making the sofa bed each day, not to mention trying to make it comfortable for sleeping on that long, I decided a remodel was in order--DH didn't really agree but said we would try it out. We removed the sofa and put in a mattress from a previous twin bed Sunny of ours--fit in perfectly and we now have a daybed--GREAT for lounging and for sleeping!!! Took a total of about an hour and a half. DH is now very happy with his new bed and so am I--no more stashing the extra bedding during the day-and I have a comfortable place to stretch out and read or watch TV. He is up several times at night and first up in the AM so this will work out great for us!!It only comes out 2" farther than the sofa did when closed, and six inches less than when it was opened. See my pics below.(Thanks to Hutch for the instructions on pic posting!)

Janalee,
That looks wonderful. I have a question. I'm guessing that under the sofa was an 1/8 thick piece of luan board. The sofa is basically self-supporting with it's frame work and now that the sofa is gone, what is supporting the new twin mattress? Sounds like a mod I might consider myself, as the sofa is "NOT" all that comfy as a sofa or bed.[

how-to do sofa mod...
Kitty, As you may know in the 2653 the sofa sits in a sort of alcove.Under the sofa is the furnace and an enclosed outside access (for the electric)-no luan over these things. Once the frame was removed, it was very easy to place something over the space by utilizing the 2X4 braces on each side that the sofa frame was attached to..the enclosed access box and enclosed furnace serve as added 'supports'.Also ran a runner along the rear wall for a short span as an extra support there. On top of this I used a hollow core door we had from an old closet and that serves as the "bed platform"..this was so no legs were needed for the front as there is an overhang of about 7 or 8 inches. I was going to use 1/2" plywood but since this was just going to be an experiment,I didn't want to get into expenses..now I feel I will leave it this way--just looking for the perfect quilt now!! I never did like that flowered upholstery that came on it--(we bought this used a few months ago.)I like the country look this has given it!!

Jan,
Very nice job, looks great (and I bet if feels better than it looks )
Thanks for sharing the pictures. I always enjoy seeing pictures of other people’s units. I get a lot of ideas from the pictures for our own unit.

Jan,
Nice job on the mod. You don't plan on throwing out your couch, do you? I have that same interior (Black Cherry Tapestry) in mine.

sofa mod..
No Jon...I am not throwing out the sofa..carefully wrapped and put away in case we sell the trailer and someone wants it instead of the daybed. I really don't like those loud flowers in that tapestry...sorry....and to answer the other comment--YES..it is REAL comfy!!!![/b]

SOmething I learned from an Amish lady who repairs old quilts....don't wrap fabric in plastic. If it can't breath it will develope brown stains over time where there are folds or creases. She said to wrap in tissue or old sheets. (obviously you can't wrap a sofa in tissue)
