replacing floor in our 2000 sunline advancer

I have been putting this project off for a year now and decided it needs to be done before we get to Buttonwood campgrounds.started yesterday and got most of the floor that needed to be replaced taken out.so far the hardest part has been taking the cupboards out, after getting everything out of the front of the camper the water seems to be leaking around the windows, going to take them out and rechalk them..I will have Diana post pictures this evening of our progress so far..I also need help and information on what to do with the outside siding,it pulled apart last year and its held together gorilla tape {read John B's post to another man who's siding came apart on his advancer} working good so far doesn't seem to be leaking any place where the tape is.....need alot of help and information .thank you steve

The gentleman helping us, TJ, says we will be ready to go to Buttonwood in June. He also wants to know how hard it is to replace the wood framing on the walls under the siding. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Steve

Hi Steve,

You for sure have a project there... and it looks like your are "into" it. The good news, it is all fixable. You seem to be handy and have the tools, so we can help with the what to do.

You said
Quote:
the front of the camper the water seems to be leaking around the windows, going to take them out and rechalk them.
When you said caulk, are you thinking tube caulk? What is better then tube caulk as the main seal is, butyl sealing tape first, insert the window, the if you want after it sets up some, apply dicor non leveling sealant.

This post may help some. It talks about the sealing tape, the siding and how to treat bad wood or infected wood from dry rot. It is mt slide floor, but it has many parts that aline with you fix.

Here is another http://www.sunlineclub.com/forums/f7...eak-14768.html

What specific questions do you have? and any pics to go with them?

Hope this helps and good luck

John

John B. thank you for your information and all you knowledge, I sure hope you folks guide us thur this project..we did pull a window out yesterday and it appears it wasn't the 1st time it was taken out, wasn't even the right type of chalk. I did reseal it with butyl tape, but the more I looked at it I am going to have to take the walls out up front and redo them also..thank you for the links and I need your continued help.......steve

Hi Steve,

You "might" have more than 1 source of leak. Can't rule it out just yet

It looks like the front wall has puckered up wall paper and the PO used what looks like the plastic bead board screwed over the whole front. The corner of the outside of the camper is a "suspect" to be proven it is not a problem. When you take the wall board off the front you will see what you are up against.

Depending how bad the wall studs are, you have 2 general choices.

1. For short rotted studs. Cut out the rot back to sound wood and "sister" a new stud from the floor up and next to the good part that is left. Do a good length overlap and fasten good to the orignal stud.

2. If you have a lot of the stud gone, then total replacement is an option to consider.

What to do with the siding staples on the rotted studs will be a judgment call pending how bad the situation is. It is not that hard to remove the siding from the bottom up and taking care when pulling the staples out you can not tear the siding and put in it back on again and never know it was off.

If the corner stud is all but gone, then the siding has to be dealt with as you have both the front and the side to tie in.

This all comes down to a judgment call once you get it apart and see what you have.,

This pic from the factory may help on how the front and sides are built

Hi John, I spent yesterday afternoon chalking all the seams on the roof, took off all covers rechalked under them also.I used about 4 tubes of chalk to make sure everything was done. also took out 2 side windows along with the front window and resealed them.I believe they were taken out before, because they only had a bead of chalk around each 1.so far with everything that has been tore out from the inside it has been dry rot wood in the affected areas.also we have found no evidence of any mold from what we have taken out..we had an all nite rain last nite and this morning there seemed to no new water any where on the inside.. I will have Diana post new pictures this weekend of our progress.......thank you for the help....steve

Progress Report

We've decided everything had to be removed and all the under flooring replaced. It was a relief to see the foam that will remain and that we didn't have to replace rotted plywood.

Wall boards will also be replaced. As you can see they've been rigged, cut, and repaired poorly. No wonder you could feel a cold draft while sitting at the table!

Next we're off to Lowe's for Pergo floor - hoping to find something on sale!

Regards,
Steve and Diana

Steve you are doing GREAT!!!

You are for sure "Handy"!! Good for you. The floor looks really good.

It also just dawned on me seeing your pics, It looks like you have the fiberglass siding not the aluminum. Did not realize that. My comments on how to remove aluminum siding do not apply well on the glued fiberglass panels.

Have you figured out where the leak came from that took out the front wall? Was it a corner seam, roof seam or other seam/seal?

Thanks for sharing the pics. This helps a lot of fellow forum members who will come behind you in the similar situations.

Keep up the good work!

John

John, thank you for the kinds words. This has turned into a lot more than we planned, but we figured we'd better do it right. When I was on the roof Thursday, there was a seam that the PO had fixed but the calk was in bad shape. We calked every seam, redid all the vents. Also found regular house calk around the windows.

The front corner pulled loose last year. There was nothing left to hook to so we used gorilla tape for a quick fix. Now we're going to need information and help to fix the corners properly.

Also needed more aluminum support beams in the floor.

Plus when we pulled the front apart, there was not a single piece of wood. Don't know if this style camper didn't come that way or not. But we had it framed in for stability as you can see if the picture.

Will post more pictures tomorrow night. Thanks for all the help and encouragement!

Hi Steve,

Take a pic of what is sort of left of the corner. I know how the aluminum siding one go together, I'm assuming the fiberglass sided ones are similar.

Is there an outside aluminum corner molding? Screws on the front of camper with a vinyl cover over the screws.

If it looks like this, (this is a slide flange but same concept.) then you need to fix the wood, take the corner off, clean up the old putty, put new butyl on and screw back on. Up top of the roof need to tie that in. Once the butyl stops ozz'ing you can put a bead of non leveling Dicor on it to seal the dirt from sticking to the butyl. Use a wet soapy finger to spread. It is amazing even it spreads and not stuck to your finger.

Good morning John, did not get any pictures last evening because Diana had a meeting last evening and was dark by time she got home, she will have some tonight.yesterday got all the wiring hooked back up,side boards are all back in place as well as the cupboards.I am hoping to have the inside completed in the next couple of days. the flooring we ended up going with is VersaLock luxury vinyl tile & plank,we were at Lowes looking at wood but a gentlemen came to help us and asked were we were going to use it and I told him it was for the camper,he explained that Lowes would not honor the warranty seeing it was going in the camper. He showed us this vinyl flooring that they would honor the warranty, plus it was almost $2.00 a square ft. cheaper. We needed 3 boxes of this compared to 5 of the prego wood flooring..I will also have Diana take pictures of the outside corners............thank you....steve
