Insulation

I've torn out a bunch of insulation from the walls... anything that had turned black, or had signs of plants growing through it, or animals living in it. 1/2" fiberglass doesn't seem to exist anymore. Framing is 1x2, so I don't have a lot of choices for replacement. My only choices seem to be 3/4" rigid foam, or reflective insulation. I'm leaning toward Reflectix for ease of installation and sound deadening, as well as R value. I'm more interested in keeping heat out than in, so it seems to make sense.

What have others used to replace old insulation? Any suggestions?

I think the silver backed stuff is a good choice.

I did a quick glance at Reflectix and didn't see any "R" value listed. Is it more for sound and moisture than heat transfer? I would go for the best insulation R-rating that would fit the walls and I think that would be the foam insulation. Maybe harder to fit properly but cooler. Good luck with it and don't forget pics.

Your question got me searching because I need to replace insulation as well. Frost King SP-1 is a 3/4" fiberglass insulation. Comes in 16"x48" roll. E-bay had it for 3.99/roll, but I think it is available in stores as well. Do a search for fiberglass insulation.

Johns-Manville also makes rolls of 2" multipurpose insulation. Also 16" x 48".

Reflectix r value is 16.8 for crawlspaces and 6.1 for basement walls according to info on Amazon, which also has fiberglass insulation in the smaller thickness. Free 2 day shipping also!
