Back up camera
After backing our 2499 into a site in the dark last weekend, I decided a back up camera is the next "need to have" item.
I'm happy with the tire pressure monitoring system some folks recommended here, so now I'd like to know if anyone can give some advice on a brand/model of back up camera that has worked for them.
I've done a little research and found recommendations like get a wired system instead of wireless for image quality, get night vision, don't get a CMOS monitor etc.
There are so many brands and features, any help on this?
Thanks,
Rich

I have a Hopkins smarthitch camera .for hitching purposes but the screen is rather small. I would prefer larger.
After playing around with different ones I would stay away from wireless. At that distance reception becomes an issue. also allot of static in wireless I tried.
If you go with a backup camera. They only work when in reverse, so I added a switch that I can turn it on when needed without being in reverse

My truck did not have a backup camera as part of the factory build. I purchased a kit from Rear View Safety that included a 7" monitor and a three input multiplexer plus one camera and necessary cabling. Rear View Safety offers all kinds of accessories and parts so I can add cameras as needed. They also have cabling in various lengths and a quick disconnect for trailer/toad installations. Additionally, for car and truck installs they do offer OEM type cameras.
Here's the kit I started with: RVS-770613 | Backup Camera System | Rear View Safety
They now offer a variety of kits to suit most needs.
Here's the monitor installed in my truck to the right of the microphone:

Thanks for the replies.
I'm looking over the models from Rear View Safety. Steve, what is the purpose of the microphone and speakers?

I believe Steve is a Volunteer F/F and/or EMT. If you look closely on the dash, behind the radio, I believe that is the back of a dash light. (Strobe??)
In MD, Chiefs and the head EMS Official ( in my case, it was Asst. Chief) could have red lights on thier private vehicles. I ran a red revolving dash light. I'm a dinosaur, LEDs and Strobes were not common in the late 90's.[emoji6] I also had a radio, but it was a portable.....EMS 1-1.
In a lot if states, all active members can run lights.

Mack got it. I am an EMT and Deputy EMS Coordinator here in Fulton County, NY. The radio is public safety channels plus my amateur radio 2 meter unit.

That radio type excepted for ham use? Just kidding I have a 70's vintage Micor "Maine state police 1972 install" still doing repeater service at one of our sites been there since 94 only thing I have ever done as far as repairs is clean the pins on the boards. It's interesting hams can not use ham radios on PS fregs but we can use PS radios on ham bands.

The unit from Rear View Safety that I got does have a sensor wire for when in reverse. Additionally, you can turn the monitor on and select any of three inputs even when not in reverse. No additional wiring or switches are required.
The multiplexer can also handle input from a video player. With the 7" screen, that's not too shabby.
It's been in my truck for three years now and held up very, very well.

I have an Esky wired camera that I have wired into the backup camera I installed in my f150. I unhook my camera installed on the rear plate and hook in the camera from the RV. I use a 4.5" monitor installed above my rear view monitor.

I contacted RVS and was advised to look at their RVS-83112 which has a battery operated, magnetic base, wireless camera and a 3-1/2"" monitor, which may be a little too small, I don't know since I've never used one before.
At $149.00 on Amazon and a 30 day return policy, it sounds like it may be a good buy for me since I want the flexibility of using it for the TV, the trailer and as a hitch-up guide. The wireless, magnetic base camera can be placed anywhere.
This system is marketed as a "Hitch" camera, which is one of the functions I want, but I'll have to check further to find out how it performs for a longer distance view. It would be nice to use it for driving when you want to see a car approaching to pass.
Thanks,
Rich

I rigged a wireless camera and first used a magnet to fasten it to vehicle and rear of camper. Aluminum camper, no stickie. Figerglass tailgate of 2008 Ford Expedition, no stickie. use a suction cup mount, now stickied.

Rich,
When looking at a wireless backup camera, you probably want to make sure there's no interference with your TPMS.
You may want to contact the manufacturer of your TPMS to see if they have any input on if interface could be an issue if you add a wireless backup cameras.
Good luck.

Ooh, good point Tom, I hadn't thought about that (that's why I ask these questions, people like you always come up with good advice!)
Jim, I did think about the aluminum and I figured I'd mount a steel bracket up at the top of the roof, or if the IR lights wouldn't reflect off the glass, inside the rear window.
Thanks,
Rich

Rich,
From information I've read, (I've also have started looking a backup camera for our trailer) they recommend mounting backup cameras:
1. As close to the middle of the trailer as possible.
2. As high as possible (1 & 2 to get most area coverage)
and
3. Below the marker lights (if above or along side you will get visual interference from the marker lights).
Hope this helps.
Hutch

Thanks,

Middle: just realized, meaning left to right.

Yup - sorry, I should have been clearer in my response.
Keep us posted on what unit you decide on and how the installation goes.

Even though I have reverse cameras on my car and camper I find there are still blind spots to worry about.

One camera at each corner of the camper?
