Axles Flipped! Photos!

All right, this'll eat up some bandwidth, but here's the photos I promised.

OK, here's what she looked like hooked up before the flip:

And afterward (I was giddy at this point!):

Side shot (pre-):

And from a little different angle (forgot exactly where I had stood before) after:

And a shot of the tires showing how much more clearance there is now.

About 4.5-5 inches of lift (I forgot my measurements in the truck), and I can't see myself getting into ANY situation where the rear would even come close to dragging to the point of doing damage to the skid bars or anything else....

Towing, she's got a bit more sway with 20 mph + winds coming from the sides and front quarters, but nothing too bad. The height has changed where the weight rides on the truck, at some point I may look into getting the modern (longer) weight bars- the truck squats a little now (but still, not too bad- I have the really short weight bars from our last trailer).

Aero-wise, getting to speed seems a bit slower, but once in the groove at ~60 or so, no difference (even with a headwind). For X-mas, my family was cool enough to get us a wind-deflector for use on long trips- even if we save just 1-1.5 mpg, it'll be worth it (and it's detachable- the only thing left on the cap will be the brackets (flat metal). I plan on getting a power washer come Spring (rent) to set up the wing so I can "see" where the wind will go (use the spray as a guide for proper angle and placement).

That's a dramatic change. Like you said, you won't have to worry about dragging ever again. Let us know how much your mileage increases as a result of your new wind deflector.

Hey Greg,

Thanks for sharing the pictures of your axle flip. You can really see the difference it made.

Not only will it help with ground clearance, but I bet it will also help with hooking up to sewer at full hook-up sites. With our T-2670, I had a lot of situations with campground full hook-up sites where the sewer pipe was higher than the trailer’s pipe.

What kind of wind deflector did you get?
When you install it, take some pictures and post them. I would be interested in seeing it and hearing what your experience is with it.

Hutch

The family got us this one:

http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/I...D:100000170796

I have an advantage for mounting though- I have a Leer fiberglass cap I got a while back- I plan on mounting it pretty far back on the cap using sheetmetal brackets and bolts.

This will allow for the big-rig effect that a regular pickup without a topper wouldn't offer- I'll be able to place the wedge REAL close and angle it- I would think that with a regular truck the wind would get caught and create a lot of bed turbulance.

The wing only came in white, but I've got a little something in store for it

I'll keep it updated (lots more stuff planned too.....)

Greg

Looks good on the clearance. And your Chevy looks real nice too. I really like that older body style. Had a 98 Tahoe with that style, that was a great truck.

You mentioned you noticed some sway after the flip. Did you adjust the shank height and redo the WD? If the TT is not pulling level or slight nose down as opposed to nose up can aggravate sway.

Any sway is something to drill down into the cause as most times hitch setup correct a lot of it.

When you get to adjusting, if you need any help, ask away. We have a numbers of us that are glad to assist or point you where to look.

Also noticed on the side of your camper just back from the fresh tank refill hole/city water connection, thee is a what looks like a silver flip up door there that looks like the larger campers power plug. If so I did not know they did this on the 30 amp campers. Do you have a detachable shore line power cord?

It shows up in this pic.

Happy camping

John

PS I too am curious on the wind deflector if it helps on mileage. I have heard so many yes and no’s on that if it helps, but no one ever said why. Us larger engine gas consumer need any help we can get.

PS I see a syntax error in your sig pic file. All we see is words, no pic. I tried to find the host pic but can't .

John,

Sunline did start putting detachable shore power cords on the newer units. However, I didn't realize they did it as early as '05. I can see how they are very convenient, but based on personal experience, the 50 amp version is very hard to put in/out. It's not like plugging in a regular cord.

Jon

P.S. I just put in a K&N on Sunday. After about 20 miles with it in, my computer (reset at fill-up 1/8 tank prior to install) has risen about .8 MPG. I will report back with some final numbers later. I have been tracking the past few tanks for this purpose. I hope to have my average stay in the 10 range instead of 9. I start to think I'm towing with these numbers, but I look in the mirror and there's nothing there .

John, thanks for the kind words on my truck- you'd probably not guess there's 160K miles on her, huh? All New England too....and only one wax a few months back- not enough time this year to really do it up. The day the camper went in it was 30 degrees and rain/ snow all morning- cleared up and got windy for the ride home....

I don't get a syntax error on my photo, it shows up on my computer, and my brotehr snagged the back 1/2 of it for his sig line....I'll repost it asap (photo of the '81 behind my truck and the '05 next to it on the day we moved all our stuff from the old to the new....)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As for the sway, I think that 99% of it was that between the winds and my road speed I was getting convergence of 85 mph winds, mostly off the 10 and 2 quarters of the truck/ trailer....

It was definitely most noticable under heavy gusts.

I adjusted my hitch when it came out as best as I could, but I needed to get my old (not as much of a drop) shank out of storage. I now have it, so I will switch back to the old shank to make sure everything's hunky-dory. When Ghettomedic's Sunny was mine, it was SO low that I had to get a really, really long drop shank, but the holes don't line up 100% with where they need to now. For the ride though, it was a little (not bad) nose down...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
YEP- that's a detachable shore cord. I have mixed emotions about it- it's good for the integrity of the camper, BUT it is a pain to deal with the plug when it's dark...put in, twist, then lock in with the coupler. It's nice to not have to try to slide a wet, grimy cord through a towel before slipping it back inside though
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I just swapped from a KN drop in filter and a throttle body spacer to a K&N FIPK cold air intake. It's a lot louder under heavy throttle (which I like- it sounds really good...) mileage has improved a little- but I tend to be a little too heavy on it- it's fun playing with the beemers and import racers.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jon, I would see if there's a TB spacer available- it helped my mileage by about 1/2 mpg, and they're pretty cheap and easy to install ($100 or less, do it yourself in 1-2 hours, slips in between stock air tube and throttle body).

With the intake, I am getting about .3 better than the TB spacer and drop in combo though, YMMV.

Also, DON'T fill your tank if there's a station close to home. Just stop in more often. Gas weighs what, 7 lbs. per gallon? Your tank is how big? 40 gallons? Fill up to 1/2 tank and save 140+ pounds of unneccesary weight.

And since every little bit helps, look into a high flow exhaust. Flowmaster makes a NICE sounding, pretty quiet muffler in their SUV series- better power and mpg, and again, fairly reasonable price.

Something is goofy with your sig pic.

This is all I see. I’ll put in quotes so it will not try to fire.

I went to fariedust2478 photo bucket and it came up private and asked me for a password. Which means I think it is not allowed to be view on the open web.

This is the pic you use to have while back that sounds like what you where describing. I found it out on your photo bucket site, which is open to the public on the open web. It is way to wide…. But it at least shows up.

Hope this helps. Right now I cannot see you sig pic. othre then the one on the Mooney625 site. Can anyone else see Gregs sig??

Hope this helps

John

I see Greg's sig. pic in all his postings.

Curious that I’m able to see it while others aren’t.

Though the one thing that is different with Greg’s sig. pic. is that for me it's a hyper-link, were most others have the sig. pic. as an embedded picture. The hyper-link takes me to Photobucket. Maybe this has something to do with the mystery.

It comes up fine for me too, and it is also a hyperlink. The one thing I notice, and I don't know if this has to do with the hyperlink or not, is the sig pic has a blue border around it.

My suggestion to you, Greg, is to take that pic John showed and save it to your computer. Then, re-upload it to the Photobucket and resize it to the small size. Then, click to copy the IMG code and put that in your sig.

Jon

His sig pic comes up fine, it has a hyperlink because if you use photobucket's pre-written pic link it includes a link to their website, I have always seen his pic, not sure why you have trouble.

H'mm

The plot thickens.

Seems some members can see Mooney's sig pic, and Kitty and I cannot. Now why?

I can see everyone elses sig pics, including the older sunline half as shown by GhettoMedic.

But Mooney's sig pic, nope all I get is that long text string which sounds like what Kitty gets.

So what forum setting is not correct and on who's machine?

Thanks

John

stinkin' freakin' contraption....

How 'bout now? I re-re-resized, and regenerated a new IMG code, and then stuck it in the profile.....

I have always seen it at an "appropriate" size- then it got too big, now it's back to where it should be, but only after I refreshed the page (clearing out the old cached image....)- can someone try to refresh and see if it worked?

Thanks!

You are for sure gleaming thru now!!!!!

Almost a little too much.

Can you tone it down to at least only 640 pixels wide? It forces a screen scroll.

Here let me help. You take your pick of them. Just right click on the properties and follow it to my site. Then save it off and put up on your site. Or PM me and I’ll email it to you….

Here is your new one as you had it. 1024 x 242 70K file size. Makes screen scroll

Here it is resized. 640 x 151 file size 50K.

Here it is resized. 400 x 95 file size 31K

Hope this helps

Did you fix your pic????

Before I posted it was monster size of 1024 x 242

Then "poof" it turned into a good sig size of 320 x 76 and only 12 K when I posted it. I only linked it from your photo bucket.

Either timing is everything (you and I on at the same time) or this is still goofy....
