awning making 101

What I did was took a 10'X 12' green heavy duty tarp. I used a 1/4" wood dowel and glued it into a 3 inch fold along the tarp edge. this folded section slides into the awning track (if you take a screwdriver or prybar and gently spread the track it makes it even easier to slide in and out.)

I also used a spray on contact cement to seal the fold flat back onto the main tarp. I used a 3/4 inch PVC pipe along the far end and screwed the tarp to the PVC pipe all the way along to make a solid far end.

I drilled a hole in each end of the PVC pipe and used standard camping tarp poles to hold the end up.

I use rope and ground anchor screws to secure the poles and tarp steady.

I ran a length of Velcro in four different places behind the awning track (if you loosen the screws holding the awning track to the camper you can pull it out far enough to slide the velcro in)

then when I roll the awning up I can just connect the sections of velco together to hold it in place

Thanks for sharing. That is neat.

What type/brand glue did you find that actually sticks to that type plastic when you wrapped the wood dowel inside?

I'm doing a sun shield in a similar fashion and we sewed it over a 3/16" rope. I have to make another one and wanted to experiment with the dowel tip on a test piece to see if will slide in easier.

Thanks again.

John
