adding shocks

I am wanting to add shock absorbers to my trailer but I am alittle confused by the method to measure for the correct length to buy. If you have done this modification could someone tell me do I measure for them with the trailer wheels on the ground or hanging down to their lowest point. Thanks

David

I have not done the shocks yet but it is on my future list of upgrades.

Monroe makes a camper shock kit. http://www.monroeheavyduty.com/produ...rofit_kits.asp

I have heard the lower mount can end up being back ordered if they are out of them, but others have used them on RV.net

I was going to try to figure out what and how they use their setup and see if I can copy or just buy the Monroe kit.

If you find anything out. Please post back and any pic’s of your install if you can. I will post when I do mine, but it will be a while, many months at this point.

Hope this helps

John

David,

Here’s another option / addition for shocks – EquaFlex
http://www.trailair.com/products/equaflex/.

Here’s a link to a flyer that provides a little more info on the EquaFlex
http://www.lci1.com/NewProducts/Flye...aFlexFlyer.pdf

I’ve also thought about adding the EquaFlex and/or shocks.
Keep us posted on what you decided to do and the installation.

Trailer Shocks

Hutch,

Dexter also has an equalizer called "E-Z flex". I inquired at the shop where my trailer is having it's inner wheel well repaired and the service man said they cost about $52 each. You would need 2, one for each side. If you go to the Dexter web site, they show a graph that is very impressive as far as absorbing shock. At $94 labor/hr, the cost would be about $300 if you didn't want to do it yourself. I'm considering having it done.

Joe,

Thanks - I'll have to look into them.

If you get them, please post your impression of them.

I too am considering an Equal flex. I have heard they are better then the Dexter although by the former CEO of Equal Flex before they where sold. But he did give real good reasons on why they are better then the Dexter. And hopefully so as the cost is a lot more. I'll see if I can dig up that post. It was on RV.net.

The Equal Flex equalizer does different things then shocks with the suspension. Both are good, and best is both of them combined. With my long TT, the shocks will help dampen out the frame bow wave oscillations faster then what just the Equal Flex can do.

Hopefully we can find a suspension expert here on Sunline Club to help explain in more detail the exact differences and which will gain us more if we where only going to buy one of them.

Also look into the wet bolt kits to replace the nylon suspension bushings with bronze bushings and grease fittings. I have not yet found on line the wet bolt kit for sale for the Alko axles, Dexter yes but do not know if they are exactly interchangeable or not.

Just more food for thought.

improving the ride

This is my first post, other than the intro.

As to David and Vicki's original question: It looks to me like there is only one shock for the 3500 lb. axle on the 2499. So unless you flipped the axle, Monroe will know what length. The 2499 has an I-frame which isn't one of Monroe's options or is the I-frame the same as "C-channel frame with channel out"?

I am also looking at several ways of improving the ride, but in my case I'm not sure it's the trailer's problem. Stuff in the trailer, including a stove top cutting board, doesn't really get tossed around. I think even GMC's HD shocks are not up to the 2499's TW. I'll add more of my experiences if this thread continues.

I have no affiliation with this company and haven't even bought anything from them, but they have a good website.

http://www.cerka.ca/default.asp

The shocks are here http://www.cerka.ca/catalog/32SHOCK.asp
and if you click on the part no. you'll get an exploded photo.

I'm not suggesting you buy from this company because of cross border hassles and more expensive CDN$ and shipping, but I think a trailer parts company like this should be on the outskirts of a nearby metro area where you live. And unless you've got a good RV dealer companies like this likely have more expertise and better prices. Perhaps other readers can point you to a similar source where you live.

The Dexter equalizers are here http://www.dexteraxle.com/e_z_flex_equalizers
There are two kits, but for the extra money you get bronze bushings and greaseable bolts which would be worth it for a high mileage trailer or towing long distances.

If money is no object, try a couple of these http://www.trailair.com/products/centerpoint/. At least you won't need shocks then.

Henry
