Western Maryland M&G?????

Good Morning SOC!

David and I have been throwing around an idea and wanted to post here and get other SOC members thoughts and ideas on the subject.

We love the Sunline Meet and Greets! We would love to have more of them. Would there be enough interest in a Western Maryland M&G at Rocky Gap State Park?

Rocky Gap State Park is located in Western Maryland’s Allegany County, off from I-68 . The park encompasses over 3,000 acres of public land mountains surround the park, featuring 243-acre Lake Habeeb. Rocky Gap offers 278 individual campsites, including 30 equipped with electric hook-ups. Full details of every campsite at Rocky Gap are available online including photos of each site. The campground also features a dump station, centrally located bathhouses with hot water, a family group site, a boat ramp, boat rentals, laundry facilities, a nature center, game room, private swimming beach and a camp store. Pets are allowed in four designated camp loops. There is also an Aviary that houses several species of owls, red tail hawks, bald eagles and other birds.

The only electric/pet friendly loop is Ash Loop, with 30 spacious sites with a few pull-through sites. We are not looking to make this a big production, just a place where fellow Sunline Owners can get together, and enjoy each other’s company while camping in a beautiful campground.

Here is just a couple pictures taken at Rocky Gap just to give an idea to those who have not been.

The check in station

Sunset at the lake

A couple pictures of the sites to give you an idea of what they look like

The bath house is located in the center of the loop

They have several trails for hiking and biking

...Or just enjoying nature.....

The dump station is on the way out of the park

*Sorry if that was to many pictures... *

We would love to hear any thoughts about this!

There is also a beautiful golf course. They have an outfitter service at the hotel that offers group hikes, segway tours, horseback riding, and childrens activities. In nearby Cumberland there's the Western Maryland Scenic Train ride, and access to an almost endless railtrail for bicycling. When Mary Ann says off of 68 she means right off of 68 and super easy to get to. This is a super place! We'd be interested in something next year if it doesn't conflict with our son's wedding.

Hi Folks

Interesting looking campground. I'll have to add this on our places to camp some day.

This is about 315 mile trip for us from home. However we may end up in that area next year as part of our Sunline road trip. Do we yet have any time of year this M & G may take place? Staring to plan next years extended camping trips in the next month or so.

Thanks

John

I'll also add my recommendation for this park. Kitty and I stayed there with David and Mary Ann, one of the times they were there this year. We had a really good time and some pretty nice neighbors! If it's acceptable, I would like to suggest a spring M&G.. By that time, Kitty should be doing MUCH better.

I guess the time of the year and our schedule would depend on our coming down!

You know we never thought about a certain date, that's why we wanted to see what others thought about what time of year would be best and would work for most people. We are willing to go anytime. We would like those who have the longest drive to help choose when would work for them. I know we have every other weekend off...so basically any time. I have been keeping a check on the sites, they are still pretty much open except holidays. RG gets booked out fast so the sooner the better.

How would May work out for everyone?

May works for us, but we're flexible. Right now the only things we have planned are Buttonwood and Memorial Day weekend. It's a little over a 3 hour drive for us, so we'd be making it a long weekend. As long as it's warm enough to ride bicycles, and I really wanted to take that segway tour Some people may perfer that you avoid Mother's Day weekend.

Your right Pam & Steve! We thought about avoiding that weekend and the Memorial Day weekend. I know others have planned family activities for those.

David and I are going to go to Rocky Gap today and talk with the park.

We are thinking the group area would be to small for us, but we want to double check it. Having separate sites in ASH loop would probably work out better, especially those with pets, and wanting a little privacy. I think at best we could only fit 6-8 units on the group site and that might be a little cramped. So we are going to see what we can work out. I myself like the Ash loop. Gives everyone a chance to be close to one another, but still have privacy back at their own site. Not to mention there is a central bath/shower house in the Ash Loop and there is none at the group site without having to walk into the nearest loop.

We will see what we can do to make everyone happy

I agree that the family site is rather cozy and you lose some of the appeal of the park with it's huge private sites. I also hadn't thought about the fact that on the family site Pepper would probably be a disaster all weekend with other dogs being in such close proximity. Good call

OK - I'm guessing we would be about 6 -7 hour trip and May does NOT work for us....we usually don't pull the camper until the middle of May IF the snow gone....stop laughing now....the door for the barn is on the shady side and sometimes the snow is still piled there.......this year we had the TT out 5 days before we left on our Memorial Day campout with friends!

We hope you get many people wanting to attend!

Hi

Barb and I would be interested in a Western Maryland meet and greet. I have driven by the park many times but never camp there.
