West Coast Sunline Owners

I'm one of those rare California Sunline Owners. I have a 2006 T-1950 that I bought in Topeka and camped my way back to Northern California. Any other West Coast Sunline owners out there? I'm willing to travel for a GTG.

I'm a 2002 Sunline T-299 SR owner in Eugene, OR. Glad to hear there are other West Coasters out there. Bought mine in Wisconsin and too camped my way back home.

We should plan a Sunline "West Coaster" get together. Assuming there are enough of us!

West Coast Sunline Owneres.

We also are California Sunline owners, albeit, Southern California. Picked up our T2553 from Butler, PA. I also have been through Topeka, KS on my way back from Florida in 2004. Stopped there purposely to check out the Sunlines. I was going to purchase mine from Roberts RV but I just couldn't pass up the deal in PA.

Hubby and I have a Que, bought in NC. We're bringing it with us to our new home in Las Vegas.

add one more west coaster

It's nice to know we aren't the only ones crazy enough to purchase an east coast trailer and drive it home. I've looked for years for a comparable west coast trailer and finally gave up and bought a Sunline. We're driving it west in a few days. Any suggestions for the long haul? We're first time trailer owners located in the bay area.

Most WalMarts, Cracker Barrels and K Marts allow overnight parking. We used the rest stops on our last trip but the big trucks are noisy.

Thanks for the tip. I'd heard about Walmarts, but Kmart and Cracker Barrel I was not aware of. We're hoping to find some real campgrounds along the way, but that might be tough in the midwest. Would you recommend a northern or more southerly route for getting back to central CA?

It really just depends on what you want to see. The southern route, I-10, is long but easy with no mountains. You get to see a lot of Texas and some beautiful southwest scenery. I-40 is direct and not too much on steep climbing, if you go that route be sure to stop at the Route 66 rest stop in Texas. I haven't gone I-70 yet but the fuzzy hubby and I plan on driving that this summer. We've driven I-90 from Seattle to the east coast, it's great too. Highlights were Wall Drug and Mt Rushmore.

There are plenty of campgrounds whichever route you take. I-70 is very mountainous as it goes through the Rockies. I-80 is at a high level but the climb is gradual. We took a route from PA that took us through Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, via I-80. Plenty of campgrounds along the way. Best to get a campground directory. Went south on the I-25 through CO to NM to pick up the I-40 then on to Southern Cal. Had no problems except we encountered a lot of rain. Since you live in the bay area, I-80 might be your best bet.

Joe,

Just noticed you own my dream truck. What kind of mileage do you get towing with it? I've heard the 2007 diesel is very quiet. Our F250 is a good truck, but getting a bit small for our expanding family.

Hi Shelly,

I have a 2006 GMC 2500HD CC D/A similar to Joe’s.
One of the big selling points to us was how quiet the Duramax is compared to the Ford and Dodge. IMO, the GM Duramax diesel is much more quiet than the Ford or Dodge diesels.

To answer you mileage question.
Our truck is 1 year old, full stock (except I put a K&M air filter in it), have ~14,000 miles on it (they say it takes 25,000+ miles to fully break in a diesel to get optimum mpg - not sure if that's ture or not ) and I’ve monitored the gas mileage at each fill-up. When towing, we’re towing a 29 foot 8,000+ lb Sunline. Here’s what I’m getting so far.

Overall Average: 15.24 mpg
Overall Solo Average: 17.46 mpg
Solo Highway: 18.29 mpg (average speed 65 – 70 mph, have gotten as high as 21mpg if driving at 60 mph )
Solo Around Town: 17.07 mpg (very little city stop & go driving)
Average Towing: 11.26 mpg
(mostly highway towing, @ 60-65 mph speeds, I've found we get much better mileage @ 55 mph)

Hope this gives you the info you were looking for.
Hutch

Dream Truck

Hi Shelly,

All I can do is iterate what Hutch said. I only have 3500 miles on my truck so I'm sure my mileage is only going to get better. I get 13.5mpg with trailer(6000lbs) and without about 19mpg. Bear in mind the truck is not yet completely broke in. Duramax is pretty quiet and above all the Allison is more than I expected. Very smart tranny. By the way, where is Nerdvana, CA?

Those truck figures sound really good. We'll have to start keeping our eyes open for any specials and deals that might come along.

Nerdvana, CA is just a play on words for California's nerd paradise: Silicon Valley (San Jose area).

Shelly,

Gotcha. As old as I am, it's amazing that I am still a little naive. Thanks, I understand now. I should know that as my daughter and husband lived and worked in the area a few years back. If you're looking for a nice weekend getaway, try Anthony Chabot Regional Park. Pretty secluded considering on the East side of the Oakland hills. Spent a week there back in May.

Shelly,

Try looking for a deal on a 2007 Chevy Silverado Classic. Its a 2007 truck but with the 2006 style. That's what mine is.

We also looked at one at Roberts but bought one in Pa. Robert's is 140 miles away, Fireside RV in Palmyra, Pa was abut 800 I think. Made for much more fun and a longer camping trip with the new Sunline.

I just saw a great deal on a Dodge truck at a county fair, in Central PA.

The dealer was Kuntz, and they carry Chevy, Dodge....etc., etc. I am reading this through my phone, or I would find their web site for you.

At the Clearfield County fair they had a Dodge 5.7 Liter, 3.9 rear, and 4X4, for $28K.

Try the phone: 814 277 6682
