After the kayak trip, as we were packing our kayaks up, some boys at the river's edge told us to watch out for the bird with the eggs. We looked and there was a bird standing on the gravel. Looking loser, we realized it was a mother with her eggs. Turns out, this is a Killdeer which lays it's speckled eggs among stones to camouflage them. Here's a photo.

We had to look close to see they are eggs and not stones. Seems like an odd place to have a nest since we and others were driving very close to get our kayaks, but I guess mom knows what she's doing!
