Question Working the propane system

I am a newbie at campers, and we just purchased an older 1986 Sunline Satellite camper (22'). I did some wall repairs and resealed the roof, and are now ready to go camping; however, I do not know how to work the propane system. I am assuming that when I get to the campground that I should light the pilot and water heater, but do I leave it on during my stay? Any help would be great

It would be easier, the pilot once the water is hot will keep in warm over night.

I leave the water heater on. It probably uses less propane to keep it hot than to heat 6 gallons of cold water every time you want hot water.
