Where to go on our trip???

Hello fellow owners.

There is a lot of snow here in southern Ontario. We look out and wish it was warn enough to go into the TT. In a month I will be called upon to book vacation for the year and in May we will take a 3 week trip. Our 1st choice is St George Island state park in FL. 2nd is Myrtle Beach SC. I was wondering if anyone has pros or cons on either? Looking at Google Earth and the park guides Florida seems nicer than Myrtle Beach and what about camping quality and costs? The miles to drive are for sure longer to FL but we will take a week at least to get there and if it is nice enough I don't mind. The site map says $19.00 a night plus taxes to camp any comments?

Here's to warm weather... I know it's coming I just need to wait a bit.

Thank You
Ted and Judy

St. George Island State Park is a nice location to camp to enjoy the gulf beaches. The sites are nice but not "developed" (no gravel or concrete pads, so bring leveling devices). The Park itself is great for surf fishing, sun bathing, shell finding, etc. LOTS of beach. QUIET. It's also NOT near anything you would consider urban... you drive across a long bridge to get on the island and there are only a couple of small communities shoreside.

We've lived in North Florida for most of 50 years, and we've camped in several of the gulf beach Florida State Parks. A bit further west than St. George is Destin, Florida with 3 State Parks... Grayton Beach State Park has some of the BEST white sand beaches in Florida. Their campground is similar to St. George's but the sites are a bit smaller and still rustic. Henderson Beach State Park has a nicer campground than the ones at St. George or Grayton. Good bath house. Both of these are located near the well developed area of Destin, but we found the campgrounds to be pretty quiet. And then there's Topsail. Topsail Hill Preserve State Park used to be a privately owned resort until the State bought it to preserve the dune areas. Paved level sites, full hookups, cable... nice bath houses. Good beach, too but not as simple to get to as the others. While it's technically in Destin, it's not near the commercially developed portion of town. It's more $$ to camp at Topsail because of the facilities, but not out of line.

Depending upon what you want in a vacation, any of these 4 State Parks will provide you with it.

Hi Dave and Cindy;

Thank you for the reply. All these parks sound perfect as long as we can get electric, water and a dump near by. What we are looking for if we go to this area is a quiet place to sit and relax. Our favourite place in FL is Disney World and that is not a relaxing place. Our daughter Kim, and her husband may decide to go to Disney with their 4 little ones ages 7 -1 year. If they do then we would go there also so we can enjoy the family time.
Thanks again for the reply. Hope all is well
Ted

Henderson Beach

Henderson Beach State Park near Destin, Fl, in the panhandle, is a beautiful park with the softest sand beaches ever. The sites, there are 60, are all right benind the dunes in two loops. All sites are among natural vegetation.

There is about a mile of beach.

Florida Parks

Do these parks have hook-ups? I really like to find a quiet place in FL to visit.

Thank you.

Henderson Beach

http://www.floridastateparks.org/hen...ch/default.cfm

Link is to Henderson Beach. All sites have water and electric.

At the top of the page is a place where you can select any state park and see their facilities.

All of the above mentioned Florida State Park campgrounds have electric & water. The only one of them with sewer hookups is Topsail.

You can reserve FL SP on ReserveAmerica.com and I would definitely do that for a beach front park.

We've camped at Topsail SP for a week and that will be our one and only return destination next time we go. FL SP have a sliding fee scale and this is the most expensive, but it has full hookups, paved pads, and an attractive pine forest location--very typical SP quality otherwise. The beach is too far to walk IMHO, but very accessible with a regular shuttle or your own bikes. The beach is as good as any in FL.

We haven't been to St. George's Is., but have camped for a week at St. Joseph's Peninsula SP which I believe is very similar. There are 2 cpg. Don't stay at the beach front one unless you like no privacy, lots of wind and blowing sand. The forest one where we stayed has water and elec. We had to hook up and dump half way through the week as we don't have a tote. The road is on the tight side as are the sites, but at least they're properly angled to back in. I wouldn't want to take anything much bigger than a 2499 into this cpg. The bigger rigs were mostly in the beach cpg. St. Joseph's is a long way from nowhere so buy gas and plan meals carefully. We had an extra cooler and so didn't need to leave the park. If you have kids, they may be bored here, but not at Topsail. There's miles and miles of desolate beach for long walks or complete privacy if that's your thing.

On this trip we entered FL from AL. There are tons of cpg. in the Gulf Shores, AL area and Gulf SP is another place I would go for an extended stay, particularly the time of year you're talking about.

We usually avoid the built up commercialism of places like Myrtle Beach. I much prefer the Charleston area, where we've been twice and Edisto Beach SP is a very nice place with a beautiful beach just one sand dune away from your camper. And Charleston has a beautiful old city, attractive waterfront and lots to do for a daytrip.

WE want to thank everyone for their input. As usual it reminds me why I like this forum. We need to have a getaway with out a lot to do and the more we look at Henderson Beach the better we like it. I was going to book a site then we decided to just go and take it as it comes. The only planed part is to arrive May 7 and leave May 17 as we need to be home in Windsor ON. May 21. We feel a big part of the trip is the plan and wehave been using Google Earth to look it over down there. Sure looks nice. So again I say thank you and come on May.

We've been to both, and if I had to choose, I'd pick St. George 10 fold. But then again, we like quiet and and are into doing our own thing.

Myrtle Beach is way too commercial for us, but Cindy's brother lives there, so we stop anytime we're passing thru.

If you're looking to relax, St. George has some of the best beaches for just that. We were there in the middle of season and were both amazed that the beaches, beautiful white powdery sand beaches were almost completely empty.

The campgrounds were full, but the beaches were so big, you could throw a few hundred people out there (There might have been 20 total) and they would still look empty

Good luck, and if you're coming from Canada this time of year, you're gonna fall in love!!

Thank you to all who have helped us make the final decision. We want to stay for sure at Henderson Beach State Park at least some of the trip so we tried again today and found they have site 10 available the nights of May 6-7 so we booked it. While we are there we will check out the other sites with the thought of moving to a second site at Henderson for the balance of our stay. This will mean driving a little further each day but that's what I do anyway. Again I thank all who responded to help us out.

God Bless and Happy camping
