what's behind the wall?

Hi All:
As the preparation for our maiden voyage continues, we purchased a 24" television. My thought was to install an articulating arm wall mount in the cubby hole above the am/fm/cd entertainment unit. This is where the antenna booster and coax cable connection reside. Anyway, I received the mount which appears to be solidly constructed of decent gauge metal. Likely weighs 2.5 lbs......the television weighs 7.5lbs. I believe I found a stud in the wall in the middle of the cubby hole. However the mount comes with 3 1/2" x 3/8" lag screws which I believe might be a bit of overkill.

How thick are the studs on the other side of the luan paneling?
Any suggestions are welcome. I'm not locked into wall mounting if there's a better way. The stand that came with it is functional. I thought the wall mount would save a space and add some fexibility.

Thanks
Phil & Aggie

Hi Phil,

The wall studs are 1 1/2" thick. They are like a 2 x 2 which in reality is 1 1/2 x 1 1/2" in real life...

The luan is 1/8" thick.

I know these kinds of things come down to a judgement call on what will or will not work. If your wall bracket is not conducive to mounting on a 1 1/2" wall stud here is a thought.

Start with a piece of pine or other 3/4" flat board. (aka 1 x something board) Make it as wide as needed beyond the 1 1/2" wall stud and make it as long as needed for your TV bracket. Along the wall stud line, behind the TV bracket you can use a series of flat head screws to securely hold that 3/4 board in place. (think several no. 10 or 12 wood screws) Then attach the bracket to the 3/4 board.

If your bracket comes with 3/8 x 3 lag bolts.... what is the rating of the TV bracket? It might be rated for a 75# TV set. in which case the 3/8" lags would be more appropriate. Think of it this way, what is the weakest attachment point? Odds are high there are 4 small screws holding the TV set to the bracket. They are maybe what size? Number 6 or 8 screws? That is the strength of the TV to the bracket. The bracket being a lever and longer will have more torque at the wall mount then the 4 small screws in the TV set, but not by 2 to 3 times the strength of the 4 little screws. Or in the case of a 3/8 lags maybe 9 to 10X.

Here are a few other threads mounting TV sets. They may help spur a few thoughts. One thing for sure, make sure the mount is solid and can be strapped/held in place some how when towing. Towing bumps can create very dynamic situations inside the camper.

Others have plowed this ground before on mounting a TV arm, they may add to your post on what they did.

Hope this helps

John

John,
The mount is rated for up to 33 lbs and my unit is 7-1/2 lbs. Might be a bit of overkill with the lag bolts!!
I like the 3/4" pine backer board idea. I'll sleep on it and check out my lumber supply in the morning.

thx,
Phil

My T1700 was a victim of a TV mount install when I got it nothing that a little bondo and some paint wouldn't cure however. The 3" screws were a little excessive for the studs, wall and siding.

Phil,

The backer board idea, I forgot to mention, if you want to stain it to match the cabinets and other woodwork in your Sunny, take a cabinet door or drawer along with a scrap piece of bare wood you would be using to a Sherwin-Williams paint store and they can mix you up a quart of custom stain to match. If there is not one of their stores in the area, odds are high most any other good paint store can now do this too. I learned this tip from Tweety here on the forum years ago and the quart I have has latest me several years and still going...

Hope this helps

John

thanks mainah & John,
I remembered that I recently replaced two cabinet doors in the kitchen. The top edges were worn, but the rest of the doors are in great shape. It just happens to be cherry. I think I found my source for the backer board!

I'll try to take some before and after pics. We have so many balls in the air getting ready for launch that I remember to take pics after everything's done!! lol

Well, the backer board stain will be a dead on color match! And it will be an actual "authentic" Sunline modification!

Good find!

tv mod update w/Pics

Hi All,
I wanted to follow up on our television installation project.

After my last update, it was looking like I was going to mount a backing board (cherry kitchen cabinet door) to a wall stud within the entertainment cubby hole. However after checking the distance from the stud/backing board to the end of the mount arm, I decided to go in another direction. Instead of mounting it to the inside wall, I ripped a piece of the cabinet door and mounted it the back of the cubby hole frame closest to the wall. The articulating arm mount was too short to allow me to extend the television outside of the frame. By changing the mount placement, I can now change the viewing positions without confinement of the entertainment cubby hole. There must be another name for this space!!
Anyway Aggie, my wife likes the location and I still have enough clearance to close the slide without having to remove the TV from the arm. It's a two screw removal, so I'll likely do so just in case.

Nice work Phil!

If you do travel with it in position at any point, you might want to put a sticky note by the slide switch or something to remind you to check the TV before you put the slide out. Hate to see all your nice work (plus an expensive TV) ripped apart if it caught on the slide.

I'm in total agreement about detaching the unit prior to travel. Even though there's clearance between the edge of the slide and the face of the set, I wouldn't want to chance shearing off or crushing the screen. One benefit of this mount is that you are provided a 4 screw base that mounts on the rear of the television. In turn the base hooks onto tabs on the articulating arm and is locked into position by two machine screws. Easy on....easy off.

JohnB,
Glad you liked my choice of programs. I only watch cartoons during the week!

Thanks Guys,
Phil
