Want a larger Sunline

I have a T-1661 that I love. My wife wants a larger camper with a walk-around queen bed. I like the T-2499. We are also looking at larger units up to 27' or so. I just bought a 1999 Suburban 1500. It is rated for 7300 lbs towing. My question is; how large a Sunline can I comfirtabky tow?

Welcome jsm! We currently have a T-257SR which has a GVW of 7,000 pounds with an UVW of 5,352 pounds. I have plans to put ours on the market after this camping season and upgrade to a bunkhouse model as the kids are getting bigger and requiring more space. We are the second owners and am happy to say I think we are making the original owners proud in keeping the unit in great shape. If you have any interest or questions let me know and I can get some pictures and/or info to help you out.

Thanks,

Swan,
I would be interested, except for the distance. I am in NY. Looks like you are towing with a 3/4 ton. Have you towed it with a 1/2 ton?

JSM,

We bought the unit from family who towed it with a Dodge Ram 1500. They had no issues. I am towing with a 3/4 ton with plans to upgrade to a larger unit as mentioned before. The distance to me is no issue if I can find our Sunline a good home. I haven't visited NY in a long time and would like to get up there again so this might be a good opportunity. I'll send some pictures in a seperate post.

Thanks,

The slide room jack knife sofa. The slide is pulled in with this particular picture. Let me know if there is something specific you would like to see and I'll get it uploaded.

The shower has the "disappearing shower door". A very nice feature in my opinion.

This unit also has what I have learned is called the SE package. This is a smooth fiberglass exterior rather than the more common aluminum exterior. This is our setup at Curry Hammock State Park on Marathon in the Florida Keys.

Kevin & Gretchen,
Your trailer looks great, but I will pass. I like the other layout with the rear seating area. Besides, my wife hates slide outs.
Regards,
Jim

Hi JSM,

I use to have a 2004 T2499 and it was a great trailer. I still miss it. We now have the T310SR which is a T2499 floor plan but longer and with a slide. Also much heavier.

I'll pass along some things I learned on the T2499 floor plan. It loads tongue heavy. Meaning as you add camping gear, the loaded tongue weight rises.

The T2499 starts out with an empty trailer tongue weight of 800lb. After loading it it can rise to 1,000 or in my case 1,200lb. Here is a pic of ours. A 2003 K2500 Suburban with a 2004 T2499

Prior to the 2500 Suburban I had a 2002 Chevy Tahoe. And prior to that I had a 1997 Tahoe which was the shorter version of your 99 Suburban.

From my evolution on this rear living floor plan, I'll express a friendly camper heads up, your 99 Suburban can and most likely will have issues holding up the loaded tongue weight of a T2499. I started with the 2002 Tahoe towing this floor plan. Pulling was not a problem but holding up the loaded tongue weight was.

If you strip the inside of your Burb to nothing but your wife and you, this includes the 75# 3rd rear seat, you can just about hold up the empty camper tongue weight. As you start loading the camper, the tongue weight will rise and the truck will be beyond the gross vehicle rating and the rear axle rating.

The T2499 tows very stable because of this higher percentage tongue weight, however it comes with a price of needing a large enough truck to hold up the weight. It is the heaviest loading tongue weight camper in the 7,000 GVWR class Sunline made.

There may be folks out there towing this floor plan with a smaller truck, but I do not know if they ever weighed it to see how far over the truck ratings it is.

I know this may be sad news, but I'm being open to let you know eyes wide open before you get one and then later find you have issues. Most any of the other 7,000# class Sunlines or the 5,200# GVWR ones may work out well. Pick a floor plan with a walk around bed and come back with more info.

This post may help you. I weighed several loaded campers at our meet and greets and created this list. The T2499 is a popular model

Hope this helps and good luck

John

The engine is big enough, but the 4 speed transmission might struggle with a bigger trailer.
