Very one off camper

Ok, sorry I keep posting things that arent related to Sunline's, and if anyone thinks I shouldnt, then I'll be happy to stop, but I love seeing these crazy one-off campers and thought I'd share them with you.

I was riding home from Jerome Arizona to our campground in Cottonwood like Kitty had recommended, and spotted this guy sitting in a little park just taking a break from the road. I was on the motorcycle and was able to stop quick enough to make the turn into the park.

The owner was very nice and said he had finally retired this past summer and is now living in this full-time. He had worked his whole life in the auto restoration business, and this had been his little project.

It was originally a Corvair van with a small sleeper cab on the back. He had nicknamed it Corvairstream.

The back was all aluminum, so he painted the body and bottom portion to match, and did it all with rattle can!! That's just spray paint for you non-automotive types.

He had fabricated this top portion out of aluminum to make the lines flow and had hinged it so he could store things under it like his propane tank and other assorted goodies.

This is what it looked like with the top part opened up.

Dennis said that he had spotted this in someones backyard and it had been sitting for years. He offered them $500 and started the rebuild.

This was really a unique camper, and while I was sitting there talking with him, a few other people stopped to ask questions just like me. I joked that it's going to take him a long time to travel the country with out being stopped every few miles. He said it's hard for him to pull into a gas station or a campground without spending a few hours giving tours and showing it off, so he is pretty used to it.

Just thought I'd share some interesting shots with some fellow campers.

Take care
Pat

WOW - I cannot believe what you saw. I grew up around Corvairs. My Dad loved them. We always had several of them in various models including several vans like the one used for that project. I have not seen many corvairs in the past few years, let alone a corvair van.

That is way cool!
Thanks for sharing it!

Later,
David

Don't stop!!! I know I love the oddities that can be seen on the American Highway, and since I'm stuck here in Central Pennsylvania going to work to pay the mortgage, living vicariously through others is awesome. Keep the great photos coming.

Ditto...love seeing the pictures of the odd campers. Steve's brother loved seeing the VW one. He attends shows for restored VW Bugs and thought he might have actually seen it at a VW Bug Show years ago.

That is so cool! The guy did a great job and I particularly like the color. Thanks for taking the time to send the pics- I think it's good to see these non-Sunline oddities.

Thanks everyone, glad you liked them. I was a little worried that posting a bunch of non-Sunline campers might get some negative remarks. But some of these are just too cool.

I like to see every make and model to try and get some ideas to adapt to the Sunline. If I see any more, I'll make sure to share with you all.

Hope everyone didnt eat too much over the weekend

Pat

Neat stuff- I keep looking for some of the finds (and forums users) on my travels.

If anyone's up in the NE and a white refridgerated truck with "AGAR" on the side beeps, that's me!

BTW- I find these forums a VERY nice change from a lot of the other ones I frequent- I don't believe that I have read a single negative comment yet! Some folks (Sunline folks) seem to just know how to relax....

Was this a van or a pick up. Both Ford and Cheby had pickups that looked a lot like this rig without the camper. Both styles of pickup are highly collectable these days.

And, I don't mind non Sunline stuff. It's still camping related which is cool.
