Trailer road clearance

Like many older Sunline trailers, my 1992 24' Solaris rides rather low. Pulling out of a driveway means scraping the skid bars at the rear. Even tall speed bumps can cause a scrape. I'd like to flip the axles and I see Dexter makes what they call an "over/under kit' for this. Looking at the axles, I'm wondering why any new parts are needed. Couldn't the axles be relocated from above the springs to below using the same mounting plate and u-bolts? It seems like the U-bolts would have to be mounted with the nuts on top rather than on the bottom. Anyone know about this?
Thanks,
Rich

Rich,

Good question. Sorry I don’t have an answer for you, but I’m curious to see what the responses are.

Poor Man Campin'
I have a 2000 Sunline 2670 with lowrider issues. I posted a similar question under the TT section with some replies; I believe Sunline Fan has some experience and information on the Dexter Kit.

I plan on doing this sometime, but not in the near future. In the mean time, I do have casters on the rear of my trailer. Good luck; and I'll keep watching to see how you make out.

I do have experience with the over-under kit, and I hope to find the instructions and take some pics next time I have the wheels off.

Hi Jon,
I know there is a kit from Dexter, but I don't think the original spring pads are welded to my axles, so I'm asking if the axles could be mounted to the bottom of the springs instead of the top and re-use the spring pad by placing them over the axles instead of under. I looked under the trailer and the only thing I can see that could be a problem is the hole in axle that allows the brake wire to exit. It is rather close to the upper half of the axle and could interfere with the axle pad.
Thanks,
Rich

Hi Rich,

I actually didn't do the job, but I asked the two who did and they couldn't remember much about the job. I also looked for the instructions and couldn't find them, but I found a version online. Sorry I can't help you any more.
Here's a pic of the kit:
