time to dewinterize

Howdy folks; This is our first year to have to dewinterize a TT. I read the information in the book that came with the trailer and it says to close all valves and run water through entire system. Now, does that mean you will be running winterizing anti freeze through the water heater as well?
We have been using the trailer every weekend as it is in our side yard and we have to bring the dishes into the house to wash would be nice to just do it there and keep it somewhat cleaner
Thanks for your usual great replies.
Ted

Hi Ted,

Your 2499 should have a bypass valve for the WH. Check on the back side of the it (inside the TT) for labels directing you to it. You should have turned this valve to winterize the TT in the first place, or did you buy it already winterized? I'm sure John B has some pics to help you find the correct location.

Jon

Hi Ted,

Here’s what I do to de-winterize / sanitize the water system.

1. Keep the Hot Water Tank by-passed to start.

2. Get 1 or 2 empty gal containers.
Note, I save the anti-freeze to use in the fall when winterizing the trailer.

3. Place empty container under Hot Water Line Low Point Drain.

4. Open Hot Water Line Low Point Drain Valve

5. Go into camper and Open ALL Faucets (both hot and cold)

6. Wait until anti-freeze stops draining.

7. Close Hot Water Line Low Point Drain Valve

8. Place container under Cold Water Line Low Point Drain

9. Open Cold Water Line Low Point Drain Valve

10. Wait until anti-freeze stops draining.

11. Close Cold Water Line Low Point Drain Valve

12. Save Anti-Freeze to use in the fall for winterizing camper
(I use if to pure down sink drains to put anti-freeze in p-traps)

13. Close ALL Faucets.

14. Fill Fresh Water Tank with water bleach mixture.
Mixture should be ¼ bleach for each 15 gallons of water.
a. I Mix 1 cup of bleach with a few gallons of water in a 5 gallon water container.
b. Poor the Bleach – Water mixture into your Fresh Water Tank.
c. Fill the Fresh Water Tank up with water – using a hose.

15. Run Water-Bleach mixture through Water Lines to purge remaining anti-freeze by:
DO THIS WHILE THE HOT WATER TANK IS STILL BYPASSED so you don’t put anti-freeze into the hot water tank.
a. Turn pump on and wait for it to stop.
b. Once it has stopped open up each Faucet both Hot and Cold to purge remaining anti-freeze is drained out and until you start detecting the smell of bleach.
DO THIS FOR ALL FAUCETS BOTH HOT AND COLD, including exterior shower (if you have one)

16. Run Water-Bleach mixture into the Hot Water Tank.
a. TURN PUMP OFF.
b. Re-Set Hot Water Tank By-Pass (so that Hot Water Tank IS NOT being bypassed).
c. Turn pump on and wait for it to stop.
The pump will run for a while because it’s filling up the Hot Water Tank.
d. Once it has stopped open up each Faucet; both Hot and Cold to purge all air out of the lines.
DO THIS FOR ALL FAUCETS BOTH HOT AND COLD, including exterior shower (if you have one)

17. Let Bleach-Water Mixture sit for a few hours.
This will sanitize the full water system.

18. After a few hours (2-3 hours), drain the water system, hot water tank, and fresh water tank.

19. Fill fresh water tank with a Water-Baking Soda Mixture.
a. I use about 2 cups of Baking Soda mixed with a few gallons of water.
b. Poor Water-Baking Soda Mixture into Fresh Water Tank
c. Fill the Fresh Water Tank at least ½ full with water – using a hose.

20. Run Water-Baking Soda through Water Lines and Hot Water Tank by :
a. Turn pump on and wait for it to stop.
The pump will run for a while because it’s filling up the Hot Water Tank.
b. Once it has stopped open up each Faucet both Hot and Cold to purge remaining water-bleach mixture and until you NO LONGER are detecting the smell of bleach.
DO THIS FOR ALL FAUCETS BOTH HOT AND COLD, including exterior shower (if you have one)

21. Allow Water-Baking Soda Mixture to sit overnight.
This will remove the bleach smell from the water lines.

22. The next day drain the water system, hot water tank, and fresh water tank.

23. Run water through the system via the City Water Connect.
a. Allow Hot Water Tank to fill-up with water, then
b. Open each faucet to purge water-baking soda mixture.

24. You’re ready to go.
