The Most Amazing Sunset

The other night I was sitting out back, watching the sun set over the bay behind our place in Cedar Key.

It was one of those nights that as the sun dropped deeper below the horizon, the show just kept getting better and better. I couldnt stop taking photos and was just amazed at how beautiful it was. What a Christmas Present as it was Christmas Eve

I thought this was the climax, but after the sun dropped below the horizon, I kept watching as the reds got deeper and the clouds continued to make my eyes water from the beauty!

This was my last photo of the night, but probably one of my favorite photos I've taken to date. I was up to 1000ISO and zoomed all the way out on my 28-300 lens for those of you who are interested in the technicals of the photo.

This is also straight out of the camera, with no adjustments or corrections what so ever to the image.

Let me know what you think, as I'm not that keen on settings and composition compared to Pat, I just know a beautiful image when I see one

Beautiful sight. Is the camera digital or film?

Reason I ask is that after four digital cameras, including the top of the line Nikon point-and-shoot model, I still struggle with low light photography.

When I look back at our travel photos, there are plenty of sunsets, but not a single sunrise. Think that says something about me?

Stan, the camera is digital, a Canon 30D and it quite good at lowlight photography.

I like the fact that I can adjust my ISO to suit the scene and not have to worry about which lens I have on the body or which film I have in the camera like when I used to shoot film

I agree with you that we rarely have sunrise shots because we tend to stay up late fooling around with the sunsets and toasting the rising of the stars

Although we did wake up early a few days ago and went for a long walk and Pat snapped this shot of me across from our RV Campground

Another very nice shot, Cindy.

I have never mucked with the ISO adjustment on the Nikon, and of course the earlier cameras didn't have anything so sophisticated.

I'm not even sure whether you can do something like a time exposure with digital, or what the effects would be. But I like digital photography, because I am FINALLY able to have some semblance of a darkroom, using PhotoShop. And I like the point-and-shoot cameras, because I can shove one in a pocket, or wear it on a belt and have it always handy. When I used an SLR, I seemed never to have it handy when there was something interesting. Then a friend gave me a 35 mm point and shoot camera. One of those inexpensive Kodaks with the clamshell case and motor wind. Next trip, I had it and my Minolta along. Didn't shoot an entire roll of film on the Minolta. But the little Kodak lived in my pocket, and in spite of having a really cheesy fixed-focus lens, it produced some good photographs.

Thanks for sharing these beautly sunset pictures with the group. These are just about as good as any I have seen. The fact that these are the images as shot is remarkable, Did you use a tripod ?

By the way if you listen close you will hear a wimpering sound from North of you its all the other Sunline Club members reading about how you were sitting outside watching this magnicent sunset. Cuase its cold up here in DC.

The most incredible thing is that it was "just there." We made camp in Cody/Wapiti, and when I woke up the next morning that sight was what I saw out the door of the camper. Just stepped on to the ground and snapped it.

This was our first trip to the Rockies, and for all I know it will be our only one. I would not have missed it for the world.

The Cody/Wapiti entrance to Yellowstone has to be one of the most amazing drives in the Country!!

I've seen that same view many a times and I think each time I saw it I almost cried from the sheer beauty of it all.

Last time I stayed in a hotel was when I attended the NY Auto Show in 2000. I was working as a journalist, and GM put us up in a 15th-floor room.

There WAS an interesting sight out the window, and I'm sorry I didn't have a camera to capture it. I was right at eye-level with the gargoyles on the roof of the building across the street!

Still, I'd rather sleep in my own bed, cook my own breakfast, and see "nature's gargoyles" in the Rockies any day.

For years, Ron & I used to think the same thing while we were boating. The views we got to see are not possible from on land.

Now that we are back on land (about 8 days in the trailer), we still sit in awe and admire our TT, and how beautiful the sun is from here.

We're looking forward to going down to Cedar Key to visit Pat & Cindy as well. We're jealous of their views.
