Finding a new outside VIN tag is going to be a problem. Not sure who would officially create it for you if you need it for legal purposes. Many of them do sun bake into the unreadable stage unless they had a plastic clear film protector added over it long ago.

The last project camper (model year 2004) I bought and registered at our local BMV needed a VIN plate inspection. Since my VIN tag was no longer readable, I explained that to the inspector and told them, Sunline did list the VIN in 2 other locations they can use to verify the camper VIN matches the old title.

1. Inside the camper in a top cabinet, either the bedroom, bathroom or kitchen there is a Sunline issued weight sticker. That sticker has the VIN on it. Your I would think is new enough it has the weight sticker. The inspector accepted that as an offical listing on mine.

2. Under the main entry door is a removable door sill plate (threshold plate). Take up the 3 screws holding it down and there is a VIN tag there.

While my 2004 does not have it, some of the earlier Sunlines had an actual metal VIN tag riveted to the trailer frame up by the ball coupler. One of my friends has a 2001 Sunline and it had the metal tag next to the ball coupler. I'm not sure if your 1998 model has that tag.

Hope this helps and let us know how you make out.

John

I believe there are places that can remake a VIN sticker (such as if the trailer was in an accident and that sidewall had to be replaced), but I've never researched them. Chances are it would look a little different than original, but would contain the same info.

As John said, a lot of times the clear film over top is what fades. If you can scrape that off with a fingernail, you might reveal the original sticker info. It seems that most Sunline VIN stickers got a clear film, just some weren't very thick or good.

I think you could check with your local police department- ask for a VIN check and once they verify, ask them where they recommend you could get a new sticker from.

If you need the info for a VIN sticker, like tire specs, weights, and build date, let us know.
