We had noticed a bad smell inside our trailer for about a week. We refilled the P traps with water, added a little more chemical to the black tank, and made sure the seal was good on the toilet bowl. Still smelled bad inside the trailer.
As usual I turned on the refrigerator a day early so it would be nice and cold before we leave on our next outing. When I opened the freezer a few hours later to add some bags of ice to help get it cold, the most disgusting smell came wafting out. Wow! It was horrible.
There was no smell from the refrigerator below at all. The freezer and refrigerator doors had been open, and there was no mold anywhere. So--onto the web for ideas on how to defeat the smell. Baking soda, bleach and coffee grounds seemed to be the answer.
When I was washing out the freezer with the first cleaning stage (baking soda and water), as I wiped out the small shelf on the door I found the culprit. A small decaying unopened package of Jimmy Deane sausage patties! Even through the unopened plastic package the smell was terrible. This package had been in there for over a month and it's been hot inside that trailer.
After removing the offending sausage, I did a good scrub of the entire fridge and placed a bowl of coffee grounds inside the freezer. Today I'm going back out to check the freezer. Hope the clean up worked! Lesson learned - check the freezer really well before buttoning it up after a trip.
