Slow Down While Towing

Cindy and I were driving down from Sedona towards the Scottsdale area in Arizona. Coming from the higher elevations there is a long stretch of 6% grade with some tight turns. Luckily for us, we have the decnt mode in our truck (Not sure what its actually called) so we could jsut maintain a safe speed coming down.

Then we rounded a turn and noticed a line of cars stretching to the horizon. Luckily for us, it was on a section where we were going up hill, and the opposing traffic was on their way down. There were 3 firetrucks, multiple tow trucks and debris scattered all over the road and median.

A Four door truck had been pulling a mid-sized travel trailer and looked like both had rolled over. You could tell because the truck was nicely rounded and dented on every panel. As for the Travel Trailer, there was nothing left of it. We could see two axles still attached to the frame which was on a flat bed already. Another flat bed had a huge pile of recognizable debris and a group of guys were walking around picking up little pieces that had been scattered everywhere.

We didnt see any ambulances, but we were obviously late on the scene. It just really drove home the need to slow down. We were amazed at the utter lack of being able to salvage anything. The truck probably could be repaired, although at a high price. The camper could be used for kindeling and that's about it.

We said some prayers for who ever owned that mess and slowed way down!!

Pat & Cindy

I drive the big rigs and I feel the best idea is to just stick to the posted limits. I know that is a revolutionary idea but I find it works for me. The most important part is when on down grades or exit and entrance ramps. Just follow the posted limits and you will probably be A-okay. If the unit starts to feel heavy on one side you may be headed for the rhubarb as they say. Life is too short to rush it by

Driving home today on I81 and the Pa Tpk Steve & I were talking about speed. We drive at 61 and sometimes even slower if we're heading around some S curves. Trucks are passing us obviously going 15-20 mph faster, and other RVers are passing us as well. It IS tempting to notch it up a bit, when the truck doesn't even feel the trailer. Thanks for the reminder why faster isn't better. Safe travels. And if you get to S. Dakota some full timers that we shared a campfire & some 2 Buck Chuck with told us to be sure to stop at the "Corn Palace" right across from Wal Drug.

If I may, the Corn Palace is in Mitchel in Eastern SD. Wall Drug is in Wall, on the other side of the state. However, The Lewis & Clark campground in Yankton and Horsethief Campground near Rapid City are great. If in SD, The Bad Lands, Custer State park, Mt Rushmore, The Crazy Horse Monument are must see places.

If Jan I don't go to New England next year, it will be out west via The Black Hills.

You should head east and plan to stop at the M&G!

Also, Crazy Horse is a must see. That was one of the (few) places I really enjoyed on our trip west.

About Wall Drug;
In 1973, when our fist daughter was 2 months old we went from Windsor Ontario to BC in a Volkswagon camper bus. On the way we came across signs for Wall Drug. As I remember, at the time they ran for about 50 miles or better "Don't Miss Wall Drug" Etc. Etc. We couldn't help but stop and look. I use this when discussing advertising events to people in the small town I live in now. Near us they just do not believe in putting it out there.
Is there still all the switch backs near Big Horn mountain.

Thanks for all the tips on places to stop at while in SD. We'll make sure to add them to the ever growing list of must see places.

We hadn't planned on that, but upon your suggestion, we may just plan a trip to New England around the Mexico, Pa. M&G. If we decide to do that, I'll make reservations at Buttonwood soon.
