The difference is the 1500 series has auto temperature compensation while the 12117 series does not.

, I think he has a Ctek one. Not sure which model he has, but this one would be close to the VDC 1500 temperature compensated ones. Ctek is a really good brand too. Nothing against them, I just started out with the VDC and stayed with them.
