Angry Sharing some info...

Angry because I just cannot seem to post a picture so I will just share this info..I recently purchased some 2' striping online at Tape Planet with great results and unbelievable price! I got the 3ml 2'x10yds Burgundy Outdoor Vinyl Tape,#TT468BU2X10, and it not only went on smooth, cost only $3.56 per roll!!!! Two rolls were $7.12 plus 3.99 s/h...$11.11 for 60 ft of absolutely PERFECT match for my 1995 TT...!
My striping was in very bad shape and couldn't be removed w/o damaging the surface-it looked like an alligator skin. I cleaned it well, then again with denatured alcohol, spritzed with a drop of Dawn in water, peeled the backing off and it went on so nice. The customer service person was very helpful and informative, and it arrived in four days. It really looks great!!! and they have many colors and sizes to choose from. Sorry I just can't share the pics..Janalee

That looks great Janalee! You're right, the color match looks nearly perfect. Here are your pics:

After:

That red stripe was a problem, I remember patching new pieces over on my '94s. But that was back when striping was still available from Sunline, so I ordered what I needed and just used the burgundy part.

Thanks Jon and Wannabees! I am quite pleased with the results and will finish the rest of my TT now that our "rainy season" is letting up. Yes, Sunline had quite a problem with their striping for awhile especially the burgundy and the blue. I bought a few rolls at their auction one year and threw a lot away. I ended up spitting it into smaller sections and selling the good parts to a local used car dealer after I got what I needed. I also got some of the orange and red and that was good but how much orange can you use, lol! Of course, all those colors were in the late 80's production lines. You could tell which were bad because the backing would not peel away. A lot of it was 3M. This striping is very nice to work with and you can't tell the difference in the color, at least my burgundy shade. Matches my friend's1998's also.

After removing the decals I begin to see why they crack the ones on a flat surface seemed to be fine the one where it's curved seem to crack I think it's the siding expanding in the sun at a different rate at the surface. The interior of mine is certainly not what Sunline did they made nice campers no doubt about it but I guess it's like a new bought house you are going to make it yours. I chose paint because I do not think it will crack like the decals I think that bothered me more than the fading.

This could play a role, but I think it's more the vinyl heating up and shrinking. The grooves provide a great place for the vinyl to shrink and release from the metal. This allows water and dirt to get behind and prevent them from resticking. Over time, a combination of water freezing underneath and more shrinkage/sun damage to dry out the vinyl eventually causes the decal to crack there. It's easy in that spot vs somewhere that the decal is stuck down all around.

I still remember on our first Sunline, the rock guard decal still looked new after five years, it was regularly waxed, but the decal itself was shrinking on the fiberglass. You could see a small adhesive halo on the fiberglass around the decal, from where it used to be.

Just went through that with that with the rock guard It was so bad and the attempts to correct it just made it worse I ended up drilling the rivets out of the frame and turning the fiberglass around!

Shouldn't need to drill the rivets out to remove the fiberglass? Just remove the crossmembers in the back, remove the cord around the edge, and it should slip out.

Not enough room to get it out it fits inside of the channel. Only thing the cord does is press it tight against front face the chanel is a flat "U" shape as it was I had to take the cross brace out too in order to open the frame enough to get it out. On mine the cross brace does nothing other than give it a bit of strength if it's pushed on there were some foam stick on pads that touched the back of the fiberglass. it's no big deal just 1/8" rivets probably 1/2 hour job.
