Smile Sewer hose woes

Over the weekend, I once again found myself and my wonderful little Sunline at the horse show camp ground. My little Sunny is the oldest and, I am told, 'ugliest' camper on the block, but I don't care. I love my little rig.

All was well until Super Husband came to haul her home on Sunday. I was going to be working the show until dark, so he came to pack her up and haul back home for me. On the way out, he went to the dump station and encountered a not so nice problem.

The cheap replacement sewer hose that we have decided not to behave so nicely. Husband hooked up, dumped the black tank, and then discovered that one of the kids must have used WAY too much toilet paper and a clog began to form. He decided that since the black tank was now empty to go ahead and open the grey tank. Unfortunately, that did little to bust up the clog. Husband decided to wiggle the hose, and then the whole thing just popped off the pipe. (Not the first time this happened, but it has previously ALWAYS happened to ME.) Use your imagination for what happened next.

Husband dealt with the resulting mess OK, but he has informed me that I MUST invest in a stinky slinky that will not pop off of the plumbing. I have to agree with him here.

Does anyone have any recommendations as to what brand/type of hose will stay put? I'm seeing a lot of stuff online, but I would love to know what everyone thinks in terms of quality. Any tips for Super Husband on how not to make a mess at the dump station? (Yes, I know how to dump a camper, but he IS my husband and therefore doesn't always like to listen to my big mouth. He HAS, however agreed to read any and all responses and take advice to heart, so I'd appreciate the help!)

Thanks, and happy camping!
Jen

Jen,

When we got our Sunline last August, the PO included his "stinky slinky," which was a cheap model; in his defense, he never used it much b/c he mostly camped at a site with full hook-ups. Both my husband and I looked at it and said, "No way!" We did some research and bought a RhinoFlex hose like this one:

Camco 39761 RhinoFLEX 15' RV Sewer Hose Kit with Swivel Fittings : Amazon.com : Automotive

We're very happy with the Rhinoflex and have no hesitation recommending it. As total newbies, we've never had a dumping "accident" with it and when you put it on it stays put. (Now you know, of course, what is going to happen to us now that we've said that... )

PS - How dare they call your Sunny ugly?!

This is what we have,20' EZ Coupler Kit, has worked well for 6 years:

We also hook one of these 3" 45 degree clear connectors between the trailer and the hose, it lets you see what's happening, very handy when flushing:

The 90 degree connector has three different size threads allowing a positive connection when available, but we have also acquired a set of these weights for when the threads don't work:

...and that opinion comes from people whose trailers are full of horse flesh and road apples? How insulting! (They've got to be jealous!)

I use the same equipment and have never had a problem other than sometimes I have trouble getting the valve cap off to hook up the hose. I keep a small strap wrench handy just in case.

As for clogs, make sure you use RV TP and not household TP and adequate and correct holding tank chemicals to dissolve all solids.

On second look this could be a hit Blues song in some venues

I got the sewer hose woes
not happy about the hose I chose
I guess that's how it all goes
in it from my toes to my nose
I should be smelling like a rose
but I got the sewer hose woes

Isn't that part of the fun of camping?

I have the Rhinoflex too and it is quite secure IF you don't unscrew the fitting in error. .... you don't have to ask.

You are all too funny!! Thanks for the advice. It looks like cheap hoses will only be kept for emergencies.

Husband loves the song by the way!

I found out that the fitting on the RhinoFlex not only swivels but will unscrew seperating the fitting from the hose. .... fortunately I found out just before I pulled the handle for the black tank.
