Settle an argument please

On our 2003 T-2499 the toilet holds water for about 4 to 5 minutes, DW says her friend says it's not supposed to. I say yes it is, just like in the house toilet. This being our first camper, we don't have a clue.......HELP!!! Chuck and Terry

Depending on the condition of the seal, they can hold water until it evaporates! If the seal is degraded, or if something is stuck in it, it will leak down....

We don't 'fill up' our camper toilet like the house toilet, but it will hold water . . . .we do fill it up as part of the flush out the lines process.

Hi Chuck,

After a flush there should be about 1/2" maybe 3/4" of water laying on top of the ball that makes up the flushing valve. A 1/4" is OK too. Key is the rubber seal is covered. That water there tells you the seal is good.

If it leaks down then the back rubber seal is leaking. And in more extreme cases black tank gas can come back up through the leak. Does your leak? If so there is a way to clean it first before trying to replace it. Many times hard water deposits get stuck under the rubber can create a real fine leak.

See this post on how to clean. (Boy that Google search works good...)
http://www.sunlineclub.com/forums/f7...owl-10073.html

Now, making a wild assumption you might be filling the bowl with a lot of water before you do your business. Well for liquid waste, there is no need. Just go and then flush. Your year has the hand sprayer if needed to help get excess paper down.

For solid waste there are some tricks if one is well, firm. In this case lift the pedal to fill the bowl with about 4" or so of water. Yes the pedal is a 2 way valve. Up it lets water come in the bowl and down with your foot it flushes. Take 2 sheets length of toilet paper and make an X with 2 pieces of them to float on top of the water. Best to float and not stick to the side of the bowl. Then just go do your business like at home. When you flush the X paper is between the solid waste the bowl and everything just slides right down. Yes, it does work.....

Like all things camping.... they actually sell liners to do this for the RV. See here www.happybowl.com

I have been using the X with normal toilet paper years ever since I picked that tip up from Bob Livingston in Trailer Life.

I know you may not of thought of asking all this.... but trust me, it is better to pick the tips up now.... This topics only comes up every few years and unless someone tells ya, well you just don't know...

Hope this helps

John

If the toilet is leaking water from the bowl, it may be as easy as tightening the metal band that holds the bowl to the pedestal. If you have a porcelain bowl look below the bowl on the back of the toilet for the metal band and tighten it up a little.

Ok, thanks everyone, I'll try to find something like John was talking about, maybe DH has a used emery board that she used on her claws, I mean nails that I can try to clean around the edge of the seal with. Mike, I'll look and see about the band you were talking about, Yes it is a porcelain bowl. Chuck and Terry.

Chuck,

A wood pop sickle stick, a wooden ice cream spoon, even a plastic knife (fork, knife & spoon kind) with some Clorox soft scrub cleanser or other soft scrub would work. The packet that Dometic use to sell was about the consistency of soft scrub.

On the emery board, make sure it is really fine and not the course ones. The course ones, like 80 grit sandpaper, are too course. You want like 300 grit.

Good luck

John

Ok, thanks John, but I'm pretty sure she uses 50 grit. She went to town today looking for some Soft Scub. Tell you this weekend if it works.
