Reminds me of the old days after a Nick Tahou's garbage plate and washing it down with a Genny Cream Ale !!

(For those out there who are not familiar with Rochester cuisine, a garbage plate is a pair of hot dogs, macaroni salad and fried potatos drowned in onions and greek hot sauce. Genny Cream Ale is a local brew reknown for it's ability to have a laxative effect if taken in quanity.)

Happy Halloween

In the old days, we used to be able to eat right at our dispatch consoles, and I was good for a "plate" a day.
They never did let us have the cream ale, tho....

After we built the new dispatch center, I could go right across the street, have a full plate for lunch and be back at my console, all in 29 minutes.
I do miss those days, having retired in 2003.

Kathy,

I miss the work, but every once in a while, I miss the plates. Not too often as I am supposed to be on a low fat diet these days.

My wife, born and raised in Rochester, asks if the "hot dogs" are white hots. Apparently, in Rochester, white hots were the haute cuisine, not red hot dogs. Is it still the same up there? How about Sea Breeze sauce on the white hots ( she's from Irondequoit). Ahh, the good old days! When she moved to the Hudson Valley and saw me eating a red hot dog, she said,"What is that?"

On a garbage plate at Tahou's, red hots are standard, although you can get white hots, burgers, cheeseburgers, steak, pork, fish, whatever you want if you ask for it.

White hots are totally popular in this area, and there are several places around town that have outstanding hot sauces. Don's Original, Vic & Irv's, Tahou's, Bill Grey's, Tom Wahl's, and more. Don's and Vic & Irv's are the Seabreeze favorites. The others are all over the area.

Zweigle's are the #1 red and white hots around here. My wife and I buy the split packs (4 reds and 4 whites) so that we both have our choice of which to have.

I went to high school in south central PA, and had much the same experience. Used to bring the Headmaster white hots on dry ice when I came back from vacations.

When the wife lived there, many years ago, Tobins was the #1 brand. I heard, from a Boars Head distributor, that after Hormel bought the Tobin family out, things went downhill rather quickly.
She refers to red hot dogs as "hot baloney sticks", probably somewhat appropriately! I'll have to see about getting some of the Zweigle brand white hots. Next time I'm up in Syracuse I'll see if they're available. Unfortunately we haven't been to Rochester in many, many years!
My wife said that her Granmothers maiden name was Collins

Wow, after doing some research, I found that Zweigles invented the white hot! They apparently ship around the world so I'm going to check into that possibility! I'm glad this topic came up, food is something I've developed a serious interest in, my weight can attest to that!

For those that are interested, here's the Zweigle website: http://www.zweigles.com/
I'm ordering $165 (including shipping) of Zweigle white hots, knockwurst, liverwurst, Dons Original Hot Meat Sauce (A Charlotte favorite), A half gallon of Abbotts Chocolate Custard, etc.. Man am I going to be eating good for quite a while thanks to this thread!

For all of Rochester food favorites, try www.newyorkstyledeli.com.

Everything from Zweigle Hots to Abbott's ice cream and all types of hot sauces. Take it from a fat truck driver, the Zweigles is the best dog you can have. Go for the natural casing style. The white hots are an all pork hot dog. Remember, cook over flame for the best flavor. When they pop open, they are done.

D***, I'm getting hungry.

How did I forget? Ya gotta have a side of the pride of Mexico, NY, a heaping serving of Grandma Brown"s Beans, of couse doctored up with bacon, onions and brown sugar. Top that off with Tahou's hot sauce and you get to hold the sheets over DW's head all night.
