Unhappy LP bottles stolen

Went to storage Sat. to find both tanks were stolen.
What do y'all use to prevent this? Anyone have a device OTHER THAN a cable and padlock?

Wright

That is just plain wrong (sorry couldn't type what my first thoughts were). Glad Sunny is kept at home. Where we live, even the know local thieves wouldn't bother as they know they might/WOULD wind up looking at a pi**ed off blonde holding a 16 ga. shotgun or a rifle or a .357 PLUS a really REALLY NASTY K-9:

Plus living on a dead end lane 1/2 way up the side of a mountain doesn't offer many ways to easily escape, unless they are a mountain goat.

I guess that will need to be one more thing to add to your "to do" list, remove propane tanks when trailer is placed in storage.

Slime balls, but they know even if they get caught, they would only get a slap on the hand for doing it. I HATE thieves.

Kitty, I love the way he not only is "Taking A Bite Out of Crime", but also "hugging" his leg so he can't get away!!!

Yeah, it does help that most of the neighbors know that a 4" clay target running 50 - 60 mph away from me has less than a 5% chance of surviving! Because they know they are neither that fast or that small!! Of course, I would also break out the K-9:

Oh, come on now, what other kind of dog would a guy named Mack have?!?!?

Now on to the task at hand, I wonder if would it be possible to some how lock the tank hold down in place? We have the "deluxe" abs cover and I'm thinking that would be the easiest way to secure everything since it also holds the cover in place. I was thinking if you could drill the wing nut and the piece that holds the two tanks so that a lock could be passed through both to lock the wing nut in place. Further Investigation in my future.

Mack

P.S. A lot of the time the thieves aren't interested in the LP, they use the tanks to steal Anhydrous Ammonia gas for drug making! How I know this, is we had a major hazmat incident caused by a jerry-rigged connection of an small LP tank to a large ammonia tank at a fertilizer dealer.

Hmm, I suppose there's always the possibility that someone took them short term? I know rifle hunting season just started around here, so maybe someone took them because they didn't want to spend the money to fill their own tanks? Still wrong, but maybe they'll show up again when that person comes back? I guess I'm just optimistic, seeing that it's in a storage lot.

One thing to keep in mind though, you don't want to attach them too well, because if you get in an accident, the firemen usually remove them so they don't explode if there's a fire. Therefore they need to be pretty quick to remove. If I were you, as much of a pain as it would be, I'd just remove them and take them home between trips or between longer trips.

Did you have 20's or 30's on there?

Jon

I understand what you’re saying Jon, but thirty plus years of riding the big Craftsman tool box on wheels has taught me that, despite what Master Lock would have you believe, there aren't many locking devices that would even slow me down if I needed the tanks gone.

My last Craftsman Tool Box.......

I lost 1 tank while camping. Didn't know it until the furnace didn't light at night and of course the fridge light came on. It was replaced with an empty and they didn't bother putting the pigtail back on. They probably figured I had two full tanks and would be home before I noticed. We were camping near mother in law's and she had a barbecue with a full tank which got us through the trip.

I do have a chain on the spare tire but never thought I'd have to post a guard dog on the propane.

I did exactly this several years ago. A lock with a longer "loop"--what is that thing called?--works best, but it doesn't have to be as long as one of the old bicycle locks.

The old rule of "if somebody wants your stuff badly enough, they will take it" applies to propane tanks as well as everything else. A lock... or a dog... can be enough deterrent to send them looking for easier and faster pickings.

There is one thing that I have very little tolerance for and stealing is one of them. If some one asks and is sincere, heck I'll give it to them.

I'm surprised they did not steal the battery. Why stop at the LP tanks?

I'm lucky as the our camper sleeps home next to the house and have never had any issues with things turning up missing. Other then me forgetting where the heck I put it.... Some how it is worse now a days...

Like Henry stated maybe a simple lock or bike cable to make it easier picking some where else. If they really want the LP tanks, no lock is going to stop them.

I posted this question on the Facebook page for Sunline RVs (I operate this one, it's not the owner's club one) and Carl responded. He actually just had it happen yesterday to him. See his post and suggestion here:

Sunline RVs | Facebook

My thinking is if a padlock is put on the allthread, they will probably get a pair of bolt cutters to cut off the lock, so what's the difference between cutting the padlock or the allthread.

On a side note, we could be luckier in that many people may not know how to open these hinged LP covers if you have one, so they may give up and move onto the next trailer with an easier cover.

True, as long as it doesn't involve welding the tanks onto the A-frame... He will need to get new purged tanks anyway, so I think this is possibility since they have no gas in them.

That's what I have in mind. I saw it on the Airstream website. I'm looking at drilling two holes, one on either side of the center nut, and mounting a bicycle lock to straddle the threaded rod and prevent the wing from being turned.
I'll post pics if successful.

No can do. I live in an old home built in the 20s. My garage can't be locked so storing them in an unlocked garage in the inner city won't cut it either.
They're 30s.

The batteries are in my basement on a trickle charger. The RV dealer where it's stored and I believe this was a "crime of opportunity," as mine is the only TT out of 15 on the lot with a soft tank cover. Any deterrent capable of foiling a determined, well-prepared thief will be too inconvenient for an RV owner to service his tanks.
I'm fixin' to slow 'em up and make 'em work for it next time.

Wright

p.s. My pop up is stored at my house, off my alley. I added a jam nut on the allthread on top of the wing and put the torque to it. That'll thwart a passerby, you betcha.

I think the idea here is like the old adage...."I don't have to run faster than the bear, just faster than you" If they want them that bad they will get them, regardless of how they are secured, but if mine are secured and the guy's next to me aren't, I'll probably still have mine.

I don't have the solution but we've decided if we move to FL as planned for next year, we will only buy a home without deed restrictions. This way we can keep our TT right by the house as we do now. We've heard all the horror stories of what happens in these storage areas. You're lucky only your tanks were stolen.

Parsimony won out

Since I already have a chain and lock, I threaded the chain through a bicycle inner tube and looped it through the necks of my new tanks and locked the chain to the frame. The inner tube prevents clatter and wear.

I hope this works.

Thanks for all the ideas,
Wright
