Looking for PA State Campround near Carisle, PA
Hi all....Leo and I will be vacationing near Carilse, Pa. next October and we are looking for a state campground near Carisle. We only need to spend one night (Wednesday 10/2) there and pick up potable water, unless someone knows where we might be able to fill our 80 gallon fresh water tank in the area.
Anyone know of someplace close by?????
Oh we need a site for the 38' toyhauler!

It may not be Carlisle, but you two are ALWAYS welcome here... I can offer water and electric.. By then, I may even have a dump station!

About 1/2-hour north of Carlisle is Col. Denning SP. According to the map I have, the site lengths range from 15' to 50'.
About 1/2-hour south of Carlisle is Pine Grove Furnace SP. That map lists site lengths from 20' to 60'.
Check out the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources web site: www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks. It's a very good site which provides a lot of information about every park in the system.

Thanks Gary - we will NOT be staying at Western Village this year....we will camp over at the fairgrounds BUT they don't have water available.
Matthew & Lisa - I did look at the PA DCNR site and saw those two campgrounds, may investiage the Col Denning SP.......we just need a place to fill our water tank before we head to the fairground....

Well after investigating further.....we may be staying at Western Village for one night to fill up with water - every other campground is at least 1/2 hour away and with the cost of fuel it would be cheaper to stay at Western!!!!

Does the truck stop on 11 at the Carlisle interchange of 81 and the PA turnpike have a water fill up? Or fill up at home. Doesn't make any difference in our fuel mileage whether we're filled with 60 gallons or empty.

Not sure which truck stop you are referring to...I called Pilot/Flying J and the do not have water available. I also called the Borough of Carilse and no go with them either.....our problem is 350+ miles and the extra weight....

That seems odd...
The local Flying J has two water hydrants in their RV lanes. One for dumping (Non potable) and one potable... They are about 30' from each other...

It’s been a while since I’ve stopped at the flying J in Carlisle (Exit 52 off I-81), but they did have fresh water and dump station that was free of charge to use. Almost seems too good to be true…
There are a few sites in Pine Grove Furnace State Park that would fit that your trailer. I recall site #67 as a very long pull thru. You should also be able to back into site 69 and 70 with ease. The water spigot is across the street from site 70. I can refill my water tank on the Sunny with about 50’ of garden hose. If you choose site #67 or 69 you will need about the same amount of hose. Choosing Pine Grove means you will have to pull the mountain.
Dogwood Acers Campground is located in Newville. It would be about the same distance away from Carlisle as Pine Grove Furnace State Park with no mountains to climb. This park has W/E/S hookups.
Mountain Creek Campground is located in Gardners. They have a limited number of sewer connections.

I think it's a Petro.
I'm not sure you can make the turn in Pine Grove Furnace campground if your trailer is 38' long.

I agree with Pam, just fill up at home. You won't see any difference in fuel mileage. We do it all the time.

Hi Kathy,
In your case, with the size of the new camper and the size of your truck, you will not know the 350# of weight is there or not. The air drag of the bigger camper is what is causing the truck to drink fuel so much...
However.... before I would ride 350 miles or 20 miles, with a full fresh tank I would look at how the tank is held to the camper. I have seen other brands used nothing but 2 pipe straps (3/4" wide, 1/32" thick per strap) to hold the tank on. Those "I" would not tow 1 mile down the highway.
On our 2 Sunlines and your prior ones, Sunline built a frame and cage out of 1/8" thick and 1/4" thick metal to reinforce the bottom of the tank. Looks like this. This is from our T2499 but our T310 has the same thing. Your T2499 had this too.
Here is a SOB, we camped with this buddy of ours. As I was looking over his camper, (I'm inquisitive like that as you know) I looked under the camper. OMG... I said, Hey Joe, you looked at your fresh tank lately? This is after we pushed it back in.... This is one step up from the pipe strap but still a problem. We wired it up after he drained it so he could get home.
Check how your tank is mounted and if there is anything substantial holding it in.
We tow with full water to certain camps as the water there is a problem. Sunline was good to us with that tank rack. Towing with our truck, I cannot tell if water is on the tank or not. And you have more torque then I do....
Good luck
John

Gifford Pinchot SP has some deep sites and is fairly close to Carlisle. Will you be going to Fall Carlisle then?

Yes Rich, we spend 4 days there - Leo is always looking for more "junk" to put into our already stuffed garage!

Both daughters are fighting on who is gonna get it when Daddy dies.....nice kids huh???? Too bad 'cause I think he is leaving it to me!

A 1969 Cougar - Cool! Too bad is was totaled so soon. I hope the occupant(s) fared better than the car. I was in my parents' 1974 the night it was totaled by a drunk driver (who didn't see all those red lights across the back or the one hanging above the road) before they made the first payment on it! Nice that Leo was able to save the 1969 and lucky you!

Rich is right. Pinchot State Park is within 15 or so miles of Carlisle. It's about 3 mins from our house, and I can be in Carlisle in about 20 mins or so. It's an easy drive....and Pinchot is a nice park.
