JohnB's Special Sunline Quiz

Ok John, identify! I did put a couple tricks in here, but they shouldn't be too bad. A couple of them will have year ranges of up to two years, because you can't really tell exactly from the picture.

Wow Jon, you out did yourself.

I'll invite other Sunline members to join in. Take your pick and post away. Name that camper!!

I'll get started on some of the easier ones for me.

This one. It has the 2005 side decals, the 2005 fenders and is a more rare model. It is part of the new S line. Front dinette on the door side, mid kitchen on the door side and rear in the bed room area. I say it is a 2005 T-2380S

This one has the 2005 front decal, the 2005 fenders and most important is a toy hauler. Front bedroom, center kitchen and toy hauler area in the back, The Transport with the SE siding option. A 2005 T-2675

This one is at least a 2006 due to the gold fenders. It has a rear roof fridge vent which points to a rear kitchen model and a front bedroom. I'm going with 2006 T-2570. It's not a 2007 as they dropped the rear kitchen floor plan after 2006.

This one, boy you didn't give me much to go on. There are a few models that have this front end on it. This has a front bedroom and the slide starts right at the end of the bedroom. First off, the orange Sun decal puts it into a 2006 or 2007

For the 2006, it is either a T-264SR or a T-276SR

For the 2007, it is either a T-264SR or a T-276SR

If I could see the roof a little I could tell where the Wineguard antenna is and know better which one it was. Or more of the camper in general.

I'm going to estimate it is a 2006 T-264SR. The bedroom straight length is a few inches shorter before the slide on the T264SR then the T-276SR and the pic perspective points more 264 then 276

Well all for now. The others I have to work at harder.

Thanks

John

This is a good quiz. Not that I am that knowledgeable, but I looked so long for a Sunline to buy that I became fairly exposed to the ones between the 80s to early 2000's (my price range) I will guess this one as a ...umm.. 1996. (?)

Yes, the S Series! 2005 T-2380S is correct.

Yep, that's correct, 2005 TS T-2675. It could be an early 2006 as well, since the 2006 models looked pretty similar. They didn't build many that year and there was some carry over. The TS line really saw big decal updates in 2007, with the red and gray. FYI, all Tran-Sports have the SE package standard.

Yes, 2006 T-2570 is correct, exactly for the reasons you mentioned. 2007 brought the 257SR, but aside from being slightly taller, it also has double entry steps. This only has single.

Yep, this one was tricky for me too. 2006 T-264SR is correct! I wasn't sure myself and had to investigate, because this is a tough one to ID. The giveaway was the storage compartment on the slide. 264SR has a front couch in the slide, which has the storage compartment there, and the 276SR has the couch with storage compartment in the rear. I attached a pic for reference. The Solaris decal placement is nothing to go by for model reference because those varied- some have them on the front storage doors, some on the slide storage doors, and some (like mine) have none at all.

Yes, you have the year right! The aftermarket brown paint can really throw things off, which is why I put it in here. But with the black lower, black rounded fenderskirts, and the large picture window with the jalousie insert, that would make it a 1996. 1997 brought a large sliding window in place of that large jalousie, and 1996 was the first year for the rounded tandem fenderskirts with black (vs. gray) lower.

lol..great!..I was coming back to edit my post that the windows were a focus of mine The large window is what caught my eye. The brown looked weird but I did see the small Solaris logo under the front was still in place. Those doors!

Thanks and have a great day

Since Karen picked the year, the rest is easier. Although I have seen this lower black siding striped camper here recently by a fellow Sunliner.... A very different and unique feature and knowing this Sunliner, no way would he paint that strip that was not original. He is extremely particular about keeping his Sunlines totally original. Any one know this happy camper?

Also odd in the 1996 brochure they show several campers without that lower black strip. It only shows up on page 4 of the 96 brochure next to the 5th wheels they have a camper there with the black lower strip. Wonder why some have it and some don't.

I'm going with a 1996 T-2363 Front table/couch, center area fridge, sink/kitchen on non door side and rear walk around bed. The fridge vent next to the front door was a tell tale. I can't tell from the pic is it has the Option B flooring or not.

Thanks

John

Your right, I missed the cargo hole under the couch. You can just see it in the pic if you zoom in. I'l add that tip to my Sunline spotting skills

This one is another hard one from only this one side.

I'm saying this is a T-2670. Rear bunks, front master bedroom, mid kitchen.

The issue is the year. The green top strip seemed to be a 1996 thing. Come 1997 the green strip turned to red and even 94 had a red strip. All 3 years had the T-2670. If we could see the front rock guard decal we could sort out as in 96 as the front decal changed.

I'm going to go with 1996 T-2670

This one has the at least 1996 front decal but the top strip is hard to tell if it is green or red from the pic. And then the windows are different then a 96, so more of a 97 or 98.

The floor plan is a T-2653 Front kitchen, mid bath and rear bedroom with the bed turned 90 degress

Now the year... in 98 the black lower strip is gone and white fenders so it's not a 98.

I'm going with 1997 T-2653

All for tonight.

Thanks

John

Haha I think I do know of him! He just clearcoated the existing paint though. That lower dark piece started out as a light gray in 1992, changed to a darker gray for 1993-95, black for 1996-97, white for 1998-01, and then variations of gold for 2002 and up. Actually, the idea debuted in 1990-91 in the form of about a dozen small stripes placed from the bottom up about a foot. They were like 1/8" wide stripes.

Hmm, I'm not seeing this. On the front page's 1950, it blends in, but you can see the front corner molding extends down to the bottom, showing that the white siding isn't the bottom. The 2653 picture throughout also has it, the door frame extends down into the black part.

Yep, that's correct! And yes, no way to tell option front A or B. I was curious if they still offered this in 1996 so I looked it up. Interesting that option A and B were basically the same, just apparently a flooring difference. But the main floorplan's front area as well as the optional front both say "Optional Front B", indicating that A isn't even shown. Option front A would be the half dinette option, so basically a dinette bench in place of the chair, opposing the couch. This originates in the '80s when that's the only way that floorplan came. They eventually dropped option front A entirely and just offered the B plan chair. When I did this brochure, this was by the time I wasn't editing any of the interior pages, so I know this wasn't a mix up on my part- it has to be a misprint.

Yes, 1996 T-2670 is correct!

The upper stripe wasn't red in 1997. The upper stripe actually originated all the way back in 1976, and was a decal stripe as far as I can tell all the way through 1991. It changed to the painted aluminum we know in 1992, and was burgundy for 1992-95. It changed to dark green for 1996-99. Then navy blue for 2000-01, and gold for 2002-07.

1995-98 had the unique slanted sun silhouette, and the stripe was even all the way around. Prior to that, it stepped up in the back. 1996 was the first year of the three stripe. The easiest way to tell a 1996 from a 97, aside from large picture windows, is the front edge of the main stripe. The top red stripe (of the three) is cut on an angle at the front, and then a piece of that red stripe is put down on an angle in front of the rest. Similarly, the striping on the rock guard is cut at like a 45 degree angle on the end. 1997-99 used a die cut curved green piece in front of the striping and on the rock guard at the end of the stripe.

Yes, '97 2653 is correct! Stripe matches up and has the die cut curved green part I mentioned above, plus has the sliding window for the large window.

I must of had the black striped thing mixed up last night. I kept flipping between year brochures and somehow goofed it. I went back in the 96 brochure this morning with a clear head and yup, I see the black strip on all the pages.

I can sort out the floor plans rather fast by looking at the way the camper is built. Having some of the above roof line really helps too. What is or is not on the roof really helps. But this older camper year to year attribute thing is not so simple for me with only 1 pic. If there where more sides pics it would be easier but then not so challenging. I can do the year 2000 and up real fast right out of my head, these 90's campers and the 80's... I have not made it to yet to that point... They are more mind stimulating digging into the details...

I bow to the master Sunline decoder, SunlineFan on what camper is what year. Give me a camper that is broke, any year and I'm on it a whole lot faster.

This is for sure been fun, stimulating and a learning experience. The number of floor plans Sunline had is really unique. They where masters at this. How many ways you can reorganize the same small space... and keep the camper balanced right to tow well is not a simple thing to do.

OK, more yet to go. The learning never stops on SOC!

Thanks

John

There were a lot more floorplan choices prior to 2000 too! Plus options to those floorplans that can affect window placement.

You brought up a good point about roof lines- those are a mystery I haven't solved yet. The shape of the front walls and slope into the roof changed over the years. Seems pretty standard in the '80s, but then once the '90s came, it varied. The rear walls varied too. Some go straight down, some angle in on the bottom, all are on a radius to the roof until 2000.

It would be interesting to compare true side view pictures of each year trailer and compare the shape of the front ends. The early 2000s slide trailers were very brick like, before sloping more in 2003. I'd think they'd find whatever aerodynamic shape works best with construction and stick with it, but they did anything but that. Comparing the '96 2670 and '97 2653 above are a good example, the roof above the clearance lights seems to slant back much more on the '96.

I don't think I have enough pictures to have true side views of all the trailers to compare, but this would be something interesting to put together. A trailer is a large thing, and you have to be quite a ways back in a big open area to get a straight on side view, and no one is likely to shoot just the front profile for a sale ad.

And I bow to the master Sunline engineer! No way would I have thought to look at things the same way if I hadn't read some of your tutorials first.

What's really amazing is you'd think with CAD and the ability to make a part move on a screen, they could have come up with more floor plans and tested them in simulation to see weights and stresses. But for Sunline, that was really the opposite. How they created so many different floorplans and had them lightweight and balanced before access to CAD is really impressive.

Yes, it is a Sunline. This is getting hard to get good info with the colors but it might be a 1977 12 1/2MC. The 76 brochure is black and white...

Yup with the 3 strip decals I'm going with the 1977 12 1/2 MC. The MC meaning Mini Compact. That floor plan shows up in other years 76 and 78, 79, 80, 81, 82 but the colors and the number of strips seem to point to 1977.

Well this one is done, thanks for helping. Hope I estimated right.

Thanks

John

These oldies are tough. The brochures are not as abundant in pics to pick up these subtle differences.

This one is at least a 78 or newer. The SunLine Sun now is different. The multiple side strips decals changed from 3 in 76 and 77 to 4 strip in 78. And the 78 to the 82 had this 3 strip deal. But there are other changes too along the way.

The floor plan seems to align with the 13 1/2 RD. On the year, I can rule out 81 & 82 as the roof line at the front and back changed and in 78, they did not have a 13 1/2 RD. So this leaves 79 to 80...

I'm going with 1980 13 1/2 RD

This little guy stands out as "different"

The Sunline decal looks like the "Orbiter" Series. But the side strips are wrong for the Orbiter.

I'm seeing the floor plan as a 12 1/2 MC and the decals seems to fit 1976.

I'm going with 1976 12 1/2 MC

I started in industry before the age of CAD. A lot of our SOC members did. CAD really did not take off big in industry until the early to mid 90's. And then it was slow to get going and things where still in 2D. When 3D came in in the 2,000's it sort of took over once it got going.

In the prior CAD days (not the old days...) the drafts person did all the drawings on paper. Did not matter if it was a space ship going to the moon or a camper going down the highway. Everything was drawn in scale regardless if it was 10 feet long or 10,000 feet long. Just the scale was different.

The designer was the key, they used their imagination and could visualize the entire design in their head. Sometimes when it was put on a scale drawing it did not work as the sizes were all off, but the design was tweaked to make it work or scraped and started over....

Doing 3D drawings on paper manually was very time consuming and most times not done unless marketing needed them. In manufacturing 2D was it. (2D being 2 dimension) You became real good at reading 2D drawings and could visualize what the design looked like. The shop folks read the drawings and made the parts and assembled the system, all from 2D drawings.

CAD really does not change that process. It does make it a lot easier to modify things once the design is made and use the power of 16 decimal places to check part fits if the CAD operator drew it correctly. In 3D you can show them to people who have no idea how to read a drawing but can work with it. Before CAD, drawings and designs where checked by doing math calculations and adding up all the dimensions to make sure everything fits correctly. Checking, is a skill all by itself.

The US put a man in the moon without CAD and everything else made before 1990... This all comes back to the designer with an idea and how to turn the idea into reality. Sunline mastered that on campers.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane..
