how to store awning......

ok, so ive been camping at a seasonal campground this year and every weekend when i go home i roll my awning back up and leave, but everyone else on the other 80 something sites, leave their awning out when they are not there, they point them right to the ground with a steep pitch and strap them down with ratchet straps, so i said to hell with it and joined the club when i left yesterday....which way is better and why???

i figured the awning was nice and safe from storms and uv rays when its rolled up, but then i got to thinking if i tilt it down and strap it, it protects the side of the trailer, and whatever i have out on my deck (chairs etc).......it also allows me to leave my flap reducing clamps on etc as well.....

opinions? what would you do? thanks

We used to leave our awning out and strapped all the time. UNTIL........A summer thunderstorm hit the campground...

We left our awning out one time all the way down with one side slightly higher than the other, to aid in run off, strapped, and with anti-flappers installed. We found out very quickly that the center rafter will still cause water to pool in the fabric. Result: 19' roller in two pieces. In that same storm many people lost their awnings and in addition suffered damages to their roof (including broken vent covers, tears in the rubber roof, damage to the edges and gutters) when the arms swung over the trailer that resulted in water damage to the interior.

Our awning is up and secured when ever we can't run back to it if a storm approaches. I would never leave it down unattended.

Mack

ive sat right there in the worst of storms this summer and watched the others awnings, they all seemed to fare very well, i saw one snap a ratchet strap though but he had it up much higher and not close to the ground like the others, but his still fared ok....this week i left mine down so it could get cleaned up some (knowing big storms were coming in the evening a few hours after i left) hopefully all is well but i think i will go back to just rolling it up when i get back up this friday

one thing i have noticed is there is little to no room between the awning and door, so i have to leave it darn close to pretty much flat with no pitch to have functional use of both the awning and door, when i pitch it down even just a few clicks, the screen door hits......and twice this summer i have went boating and came back to ten or more gallons of water pooled up on the awning, thankfully no damaged occured, it seems if i just throw one side down 3 clicks it is enough to drain the rain, just a pain in the hind end due to the clearance issues.

those problems were my fault.......combination of rain that was not in the forecast and my awning being so close to the door, but when my awning is in full tilt toward the ground it is virtually impossible for water to gather anywhere......ill probably go back to rolling it back up anyway though, i just wondered if there was a reason no one else around me rolls their awnings back up

The reason is that you are on top of your game and are thinking ahead.

We never leave the awning down when we are going to be away from the camper. We have seen a number of awning's destroyed because no one was there to put them up.

Another thing that I do is I turn the water off outside at the hookup when we are gone. I would hate to open the trailer door when I get back and be hit with a wall of water.

Maybe the people leaving the awnings out when they are gone are looking to get a insurance replacement. It is nice that insurance pays for stoopid people.

Not really worth the claim, most insurance has $500 deductible and our replacement was about $750. Granted $250 we didn't have to pay, but I would have rather not had that expense.
