Computer Protection, Norton expires in 6 days

OK, totally confused. My Dell came with Norton installed, and it will expire in about 6 days. Should I just renew Norton, or switch to something else?

I am computer challenged, as you all know, so I really don't want to screw up this machine.

I hear a lot of talk about how Norton takes up so much space and really "SLOWS" your machine down, what would your choice be ?

Thanks in advance,
Kitty

"IF" this decision required a power tool, I might be in luck "

Anti-virus

I use Zone Alarm on my dell and it's worked perfectly for years. However, if you're realy a novice sometime the easiest thing to do is to renew.

Since anti-virus protection has to look at every communication they all slow you down.

If you use AOL and another browser I'm not sure if the anti-virus protects both or just the AOL communications.

We've been using Avast for a few years and have never had any problems. And it's free. It was recommended by a local computer repair company.

You can get McAfee through Comcast (on their portal) for "free", as you are a Comcast subscriber. We use McAfee at my workplace (I do PC & network security for an extremely large enterprise), it's not the greatest thing out there, but it works.

eEye's Blink is rather impressive, and free for home users. I recommend this to quite a few people http://www.eeye.com/html/consumer/pr...ink/index.html

In the end, no product offers 100% coverage at all times - malware is revised and released at an alarming rate. Any of the major products are decent, and will cover you in most circumstances.

Hope this helps.

I have Norton at home and work and I've never had an issue with it. I tend to stick with what works.
BTW, I have Comcast at home and decided not to use the free McAfee because I was told by three different IT people that it wasn't as secure as Norton.
The subscription also covers three computers so I can protect all of the computers in the house.

I have used AVG for years it is free and I think it works the best. I had lots of viruses slip by Norton that is why I changed to AVG. It was recommeded by one of my IT friends, it works great.

I have Comcast and I use McAfee. Its fantastic, because it is free, and it has never let me down.

It much more than just antivirus, there are privacy settings, firewall settings. I would recommend it, but be careful if you change antivirus programs.

You must CAREFULLY fully uninstall the old software before installing anything new.
