Carry bikes inside trailer?

Have any of you transported your bikes inside your Sunline?

If so how did you arrange this, and what were your experiences in traveling with them this way?

I'm not interested in carrying them outside on a rack.

Thanks!

Yes, I do this. I put the bikes in 2 at a time and side by side. I then lash them together with a cargo strap so that the wheels are as far apart as possible. Lashed together they do not move an inch while traveling. Obviously I take car to position them where the handlebars and pedals will not do any damage.

Do you have a photos of the setup by any chance? Are you describing an arrangement by which the wheels positioned far apart act like a tripod in a way and therefore support the entire assembly from tipping?

Thanks for replying too!

Very beautiful dog btw.

Hmm, as I was typing that I knew I was not going to be able to explain it well. I just went ahead and posted anyhow lol.

The easiest place I load one pair of bikes (We bring 4) is against the couch. On that pair, I lay both against the couch but the one farthest from the couch I pull the wheels out away from the couch then the bike nearest the couch has the wheels as close as I can and still have it lean against it. Then I lash them together very tight with a single cargo strap around both frames at a point that they touch.

The other two bikes either lean on the bed or get put creativly next to the dinet. In that case it is usually a matter of whatever darn way I can position them so the handlebars don't threaten anything.

The bigest thing I found was just the lashing of the two bikes together really. I don't know if it's the double mass adding more inertia or the extra stability with more points touching the floor and surfaces but they don't budge a bit when together.

Edit: Thanks for the dog compliment. He is something else. Never had a dog with quite his ... personality... I mean that in a good way... most of the time.

I think I understand, and it makes sense too...I will try this next time I camp. The price is right too. I appreciate your reply and wish you great camping.

Thanks again!

No problem. Happy to share whatever little knowledge I have.

Never had the bikes move yet. Only downside was one time I had a splitting headache and left the motrin in the medicin cab at the back of the trailer. Was quite a feat of gymnastics to get back there.

One of the advantages of towing with a van - We just put them in the back of the van

O.K., how about inside on a rack?

You can make one of these to fit your trailer. Mine's a side-by-side, but you could do tandem as well.

Here's what holds the bike.

No worries about getting grease or dirt on anything. Bikes ride upright.

Just one solution. I made this for my pickup bed.

Nice setup Wright! I had seen this in one of your other posts on bike transporting. Now inside my trailer would this be stable enough to stand still for the typical TT ride? If not then attaching it to the floor or something presents cosmetic issues obviously. What say you?

If you cut the piece of wood just long enough to fit between the left and right cabinets (or whatever), it would likely be plenty stable.

If you parked a tote full of stuff on the wood, it would be really stable.

You are keerect!
It sits just fine in the pick up bed, w/o weight on it. I often do put a cooler on it 'cause I need the bed space. It is wider than it really needs to be because in its former life it was a storage shelf (and I'm lazy). I would envision in my trailer, it would sit at the entrance door with the back wheels resting on the kitchen linoleum.

It'll work, IMHO,

Wright:

That's a great setup. While I would prefer to use it in my truck bed, it's the only setup I've seen that I'd trust to haul bikes inside my Sunline: I like the cabinets too much to risk ruining them. Thanks for sharing your design.
