Young Cats Learn Quicker

Wright and Penny,

Looks like you've got a good thing going with you cats. Light years ahead of us. It helps that you started them very young. Our two are both rescue cats, came to us at about 4 and 5 years old. Pretty set in their ways. They've been on the road with us (on and off) for a year, and have adapted only slightly. They ride fitfully in the back seat of the truck, and they hate breaking camp. They go hide.
Great job on your guys !

Dennis

Thanks. Y'all stick with it and they may come around. We found that our guys ride better in the carrier. Now, it takes up 2/3rds of the back seat 'cause Fitz has grown to weigh 16lbs. and needs room to sit up and stretch out. He and his 8lb. sister ride together.
They never settled in for the ride when we let them out of the carrier plus, as I said, I feared they would escape if we were in an accident.
Our kittens were also rescues, found dumped at a local industrial park. They are litter mates, another plus. Yes, BIG difference between acclimating a kitten to travel vs. a fully grown cat, especially a rescue.

Best wishes in your efforts,
Wright

Our cats started camping with us when they were 11 and 12 years old, so they were quite set in their ways. We went through a process to acquaint them with the RV (first it was a motorhome, then a travel trailer) by taking them out to the RV and spending time with them in positive ways (petting, feeding, playing). They travel in harnesses and leashes to protect them from bolting while we transfer them from the truck to the RV and back again.
In our truck we fold up the back seats and use a mesh enclosure that is large enough for a disposable litter pan and some bedding for the cats. We use a Feliway diffuser plugged into an inverter to keep them calm the first few hours in the RV/tow vehicle. It works great for anxious kitties. Inside the RV we have SssCat to gently remind them not to approach the door (we do not take them outside the RV). The SssCat is a compressed air can with a variable direction motion detector that spits compressed air if they approach a door, or anything you want an animal to avoid.
They don't love travelling in the truck, but they settle right down quickly and are quite content in the RV once we get set up. We went on a three-month trip in the motorhome and have taken them camping frequently since. We now can't imagine camping without our cats!

I like this! Where did you get it? It even looks big enough for our Buster.

It's big enough for two large cats and folds flat. My wife ordered it online. She's out for the day; I'll get the info when she returns.

Sorry for forgetting to get back to you. It's a dog crate. We got it on Overstock.com.
