Cabinet Bed Capacity?

My brother-in-law ended up buying the 1993 T-1700. Thanks for everyone's help. Now another question. He has a cabinet bunk over the convertible sofa and could not find the weight capacity of this bunk anywhere in the trailer or in the paperwork he has. Is it meant for kids or can it support a small (130 pound) adult?

Hi Sunny,

The cabinet bed is only designed for a max of 100 lbs. (per Sunline spec). I wouldn't put any more weight up there as the only thing supporting the bed is the window valances, which aren't held up with more than a couple screws. I guess you could beef it up, but consider the fact that there would be a person up there.

We had a bunk above the dinette on our 1993 T2051. I know our youngest daughter was nowhere near 130 lbs when she outgrew the bunk. It looked like a cabinet with two doors when it was not in use: At some point, the doors would drop down when she moved in the bunk. We took the trailer back to the factory and had much larger, permanent cabinets mounted in place of the bunk. Since the factory installed the cabinets, the woodwork matched the rest of the trailer perfectly.

Al,

Didn't your cabinet bunk have a piece of paneling to go over the doors? Both of mine with the beds (1550 and 2251) had pieces of wall paneling to cover the doors. It stored inside the cabinet on the bottom. Did your's come with a mattress? My 1550 came with two (b/c there were two beds), but the 2251 didn't. I just figured the previous owners threw it out, but maybe they stopped including them between '86 and '94.

Jon:

Maybe it was an oversight at the factory, but I don't remember having the piece of plywood that you described. We liked the over-sized cabinet much better than the bunk. If the factory was still open, I would take my new 2553 back for the same modification.

Al,

Here's some pics of what I had:
1550 (panel is flower print board below mattress- mattress unfolds to cover whole cabinet):

2251 with panel in stored position (blue stuff is a grippy shelf liner):

2251 with panel in bed position:

Jon, mine was virtually identical to your pictures. The factory put in a larger bottom shelf which brought the cabinet front out directly below where the roof starts to slope down at the front of the trailer. This gives a much deeper and taller cabinet for storage while allowing adequate clearance for the dinette bench seats below.
