Awning fabric..

Has anyone in the forum installed new A&E awning fabric themselves? Is there an “easy” way? I have a handyman who may be able..I am quite handy but the YouTube videos I have seen look pretty technical so not sure about having him start something he can’t complete.I just have no way to tow it to a dealer..and no mobile repair around here..Any suggestions are appreciated..ty!

Hi Janalee
I myself would shy away from having someone with little to no experience try changing the awning material. The springs that are in the roller are under high tension and I am sure could break an arm or fingers very easily. My suggestion is to go to the nearest RV shop and see if someone does any moonlighting or see if you can find someone to tow it to the repair shop. I'm sure JohnB will be along later and can shed much more light on the subject.

Hi Janalee,

I have changed several A & E awnings. I'm not sure which model and year Sunline you are using now. Do you know what model/series the awning system is? Any pics of the roller tube and latch assembly?

Is it a Dometic Sunchaser? And the series would be an 8300 or 8500?

I have a bunch of pics to make a post on how to do this with 2 people more simple then the 1 person method I did a long time ago, but I have not made it to making that post yet. Here is the one person way on a larger 21 ft awing. Suggest you "not" use this one though, but can see for reference to see some of the complexity. The newer 2 person method is a lot easier. This is a Sunchaser 8300 awning https://www.sunlineclub.com/forums/f...ics-14771.html

There are Dometic instructions for the 8300/8500 here on our site in the FILES section https://www.sunlineclub.com/forums/d...o=file&id=5640

I will express caution, the torsion springs in the awning tube need special attention on how to deal with them for safety reasons. Not sure what the background is on your handyman. In this case, they would need to be more mechanical in nature then wood working or painting in nature and use to working on many things mechanical.

He will also need a pop rivet gun that can insert and swedge 3/16" x 1/2" long aluminum rivets to replace on the end caps.

Hope this helps

John
