Adirondack Camping - Lake Site - 30 footer
Hoping a fellow Sunline member may know,
We are looking for a lake site in the Adirondacks for later July 2014 that can hold a 30 foot camper,
Anyone know which parks and ideally sites can accommodate this size?
We had 2 parks picked out and we at the 9 months out and, dog gone they are already booked.... Must of missed it by 1 or 2 days...
Lake Eaton, Rollins and Fish Creek are out unless we go out into August.
Last year we lucked out and made it into Lake Eaton, beautiful. While there we drove and checked out 6 parks in that area and we will not fit...
Now on the hunt for a nice lake site that can hold a 30 footer. Can do most any area of the park at this point.
Any ideas?
Thanks
John

Does it need to be in a campground w/ their limited hookups or might you be interested in boondocking ? There are free ,drive in lake front campsites to be had but size & ht limits their choices. Also they are all 1st come, 1st served & unreservable so one's never sure if they're available until you show up.
For campgrounds in N Adks, you might check Cranberry lake or Buck Pond. Meacham lake has a few waterfront sites as does Forked lake , although most are boat in. Forget Higley Flow. It's 5 waterfront of 400 total sites are always booked. In central Adks you might check maps for Golden beach or 8th lake
Good luck. If you pass anywhere near Canton, NY or end up @ Cranberry & wanna borrow a canoe just say the word

helpful link
John
Check out this site
New York State Campsite Photo Database
It has maps & photos of 21 upstate campgrounds, many in the Adks. After choosing a potential campground & viewing the map you can chose a specific site (blue numbered ones are waterfront) then click it to see photos of that specific site & max length recommendations. It should provide you w/ just the info you want.
I didn't realize there were so many waterfront sites. It lists Meacham w/ 24, Cranberry-37, Buck-21, Durant-28 & even Nick's lake where Sunline's Adk meet & greet is held w/ 17
Enjoy !

Moffitts Beach in Speculator. Beautiful lake with sandy bottom, clear water and long sandy beach. Many sites for 30' on the lake but to get them you need to reserve 9 months in advance or they're gone. Same for any good site on a lake in the 'Dacks. Reservations are into July already. We made our reservations at Moffitts for Memorial Day weekend before last Labor Day.

Thank you! I picked up the tip on the photo web site I think form you before. I check Nicks and the dates are already booked for the area I was looking for. I visited Durant last year, I cannot get my rig in there. Will check Meacham and Canberry.
As far as camping style, we can do any. We have no problem with boondocking. We are already fully setup for it and all the Adk camping we have done is boondocking.
Thanks for the leads.
John

Paul,
Your lead was exactly what I was after. Thank you!!! I went to Moffitt's and the dates fit for at least 6 sites with 30 ft and lake view, with 3 of them in the, WOW yes! league.
We are 9 months and 3 days.... Folks have been reserving weeks plus so they can reserve right over our entry day.
Now I need to sort this out quick and book.
Question: Looking at the CG map and then the satellite view, is the red circled area I put on this map the upper CG area? Would be sites 178 to 259. There are so many trees... I cannot see the camper roads or pads but I "think" this is the area. Let me know if you know.
Here is the CG map for quick reference.

Thanks a million.
John

The park map goes in and out of private land and I'm just curious on were the sites are from a birds eye view.
Thanks again

John B has circled (Siberia) the area with 178 to 259. When you enter you drive through the main area (Manhattan) to the beach. To the left is Brooklyn and to the right is Siberia. (terms are from old hardened Moffitts beach goers) To the right you first see a camp store and marina which is private land. Drive about 3.4 mile, past private camps and boat launch and it's state land again and sites 178 to 259.
The main area, Manhattan, was the original area and the sites there are basically built for tents, few for campers of any size.
In the old days we used to walk 1/8 mile through the woods from Brooklyn to a clearing by Camp Fowler on Sunday mornings and attend an Adirondack outside church service sitting on log pews.
On Rt 8 between Speculator and Page street (road to the camp site) you'll see Pauls Bait and fire wood. They sell about the only seasoned wood in the area. In Speculator there's Charlie Johns store for groceries. (Big M chain out of Syracuse). Everythings handy from the camp site within a couple of miles. There's gas, convenient store, several restaurants and hiking trails close by. The Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain lake is about an hour away. Charlie Johns store was an old store when my dad was going to Moffitts before he was maried and I'm about retirement age.
On the beach looking toward the water and to the right of the change house is where I met my wife when she was 16 and I was 18. Turned out we lived close to each other and started dating. Still are!
And still camping only the tents have been put aside in favor of not involving shoes and flashlights in the middle of the night anymore.

while in Speculator area
you could take TV to check out the 3 state campgrounds on nearby Piseco lake for future use and drive N on SR30 to Mason lake to check on a few of the free, drive in, waterfront campsites which surround it
Venturing farther you can continue N to Indian lake village, then W of town 2 mile & take the scenic, partially paved 12m drive on Cedar River Flow into Wakely dam (more free waterfront camping there) Wakely is Eastern entrance to Moose River plains. A dirt road starts there & continues 25 miles (w/spurs)to Western entrance to MR plains at Limekiln lake passing 140 free, drive in 1st come 1st served campsites

We are Happy Campers!!!!
Just booked Moffitt Beach for 7 nights on a lake view site! On the dates we wanted even. And by the pics I can back in without it being an extended ordeal... Learned a few new things last year what to watch out for.
Both Cindy and I want to thank Glen, Paul and Chuck for all your help. Sunline Owners Club members can't be beat! They are the best!
Paul, that is quite the history on this campground you have there. WOW... Thanks for sharing.
A few questions for those in the know;
Canoe Rental at Moffitt, is there any? Since we will be there for 7 days I was thinking of hauling my Mad River Explorer this year. But if rentals are as cheap as they are in other ADK parks, I may just bring the paddles and PDF's like we did last time. We need to haul it for 1,600 miles so need to think this through.
Nice restaurants in the area for dinner, do you have a favorite and what type of cuisine?
Thanks again
John

There is a marina on rt 8 that rents boats on Lake Pleasant. Moffitts is on Sacandaga Lake (not to be confused with Great Sacandaga Lake in Northville 30 miles south). If you get a canoe, The beach is on the north side of the lake. On the South/east corner of the lake there's a shallow winding creek connecting it to Lake Pleasant. (google map it). Fun Paddle.
On rt 8 not far from the campground is Speculator Inn. Pretty good food, steaks, chops, fish, and maybe $60-70/couple dinners. 1 mile north of Rt 8/30 intersection on the left is Melody lodge, favorite. Great food, same choice, nice view, same cost. There are a few more burger places in town. Be aware of the ice cream/burger restaurant, King Frosty, by the beach in Lake Pleasant on rt 30. Good food but cash only. Charlie Johns grocery at rt 8/30 intersection takes cards and has an ATM. Behind the Speculator Department store is a restaurant that has good inexpensive breakfasts. The Speculator Department Store is well worth a visit. Nice gifts and clothes.
If you've never been there I highly recommend the Adirondack Museum 1 hour north on Rt 30 in Blue Mountain Lake. Scenic drive. Not cheap but great displays on history. (I think $25 each) They have a website. They have a cafeteria but better off finding another restaurant in Blue Mountain Lake or Indian Lake on the way back.
Have fun. We booked Memorial Day weekend at Moffitts. When will you be there? We book a site at Sacandaga campground 15 miles to the south often. If we're at either place we might catch up.
