12V LP Detector Beeping Problem

Friends of ours just recently purchased a 1997 Sunline T-2475. They’ve used it twice and love it. I’ve encouraged them to join the club, so hopefully soon they'll be new members here.

Currently they are experiencing one problem with their Sunline; their 12V LP Detector is beeping every 30 sec – a minute, much like a smoke detector’s low battery alarm. He's temporarily disconnected the 12V connection until he figures out the problem and gets it fixed.

Has anyone experienced this and what was the cause?

Thanks
Hutch

In my last TT the propane detector woulld beep when the house battery was low. I haven't had this happen with the Sunline but it could be a low battery alarm.

Yes, that detector will drain the battery very quickly. Have him charge up the battery and see if it still beeps. If it still does, then the detector might have gone bad.

It beeps when he's connected to shore power.

So unless the detector draws power directly from the battery, bypass the converter, which I don't think it does, I would guess it may be a bad detector.

He bought it from a dealership, so I think he may try to see if they'll cover it. I think those detectors run around $50. So hopefully the dealership will cover it.

Check to see if there's steady power at the alarm. If so, no more discussion, trash the alarm and put in a new one. I could never take a chance that I fixed it.

Paul,

He tested the unit's alarm, via the test button, and it worked. He got the high pitched constant alarm, so he knew the beeping wasn't the alarm.

So you think the unit may be bad?

I don't think he's thinking of fixing the detector, he's trying to figure out if the dectector is bad or if it's something else. This is their first TT and they're still trying to figure things out and understand all the components.

Hutch,

My '98 Sunline has an Atwood "Protechtor" GS-961-LP-RV Propane Gas Detector. I'll bet your friend may have the same one in his '97.

From the quick reference chart, there's two choices on "chirping"every 30 seconds. First, if the LED is flashing ORANGE every 8 seconds, it means Extreme Temp Warning, either below 0 F or above 150 F.

If the LED is Steady Red or Steady Orange, it indicates Compontent Failure Mode. Reset the unit by pressing the Test button until the LED turns green or a normal test cycle occurs. "It the condition persists, the user should contact the nearest Atwood Service Center."

Normal condition for this LP Detector is flashing Green LED every 8 seconds, and audible alarm is Silent.

If you want the whole chart, I can scan it and send it to you or post it here.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the info, I'll pass it on.

If you have a copy of the chart I would like on, sent me a PM if you don't have my email address.

Mine beeped like that ALL winter long, even with a good battery.

Then again, the thing didnt work worth a hill of beans even when it was brand new. Window open and exhaust fan on, and I was going to pass out if I didnt run outside for air, and the thing didnt go off. When I came back in I hit the test button and it said something like 200-300 ppm and I couldnt shut it up. Itd have been nice if it actually went off to start with.

Id like to find one that actually works properly.
