Sunline Rear Bumper Bike Rack
How reliable is the rear bumper on a 2005 Sunline T2299 to attach a 2 bike rack?
Thanks

Welcome Steve!
The rear bumper on your 2005 camper will not hold support a single or double bike rack. The bumper is designed to bend backwards when excess weight is added to it. The rear tire is about all that the rear bumper can handle. Most only carry a 100# weight limit which the spare tire eats up almost all of it.
Hope this helps
John

Thanks John
Although I don't keep the spare tire on the bumper, I would still not put a bike rack on based on your comment. Much appreciated. Steve V.

I lost three bumpers to three different types bike racks..had them reinforced etc and still lost them..put the bikes inside or in your tow vehicle..it's a pain to do so but better than causing an accident on the road behind you!

Thanks Janalee
I have given up on putting a rack on the rear bumper given the comments. I am considering adding a 2" towing receptacle to the front of my Expedition so that I can use a bike rack.
Thanks much!

Will the bumber on 1992 T-1850 support a bike or kayak rack? Thanks for any info on this. I was looking at a set-up to mount the spare tire up front on the hitch. Have you heard of that?

Looking back at the comments, I think I will put the bikes and kayaks in truck or camper.

Sunline rear bumper bike rack
Amazon sells some devices called "Safety Struts". These are essentially bolt on plates that reinforce the thin walled hose storage tube-rear bumper at the points where it attaches to the trailer frame. I installed this product on my Sunny years ago and have hauled my spare AND two bikes on a Swagman Carrier on the rear "bumper" thousands of miles with no problems at all. The devices are easy to install and have done a great job.

Hi John. I have a 2000 Sinline Solaris. Are you saying that I shouldn't use the back bumper on my trailer to mount a bike rack or a cargo carrier?
Thanks
Gregory.

I would not mount any sort of spare tire carrier or bike rack on the rear "bumper" without reinforcement of some sort. The thin wall tube typically used is weak ad easily deformed by the twisting forces that result from mounting heavy items on brackets on the tube. This results in breakage at the welds at attachment points on the tube at the trailer frame. The "Safety Strut" product I mentioned earlier works well and has served me well for many miles.

That is correct, do not use the bumper itself to mount a bike rack or cargo unit on the way the bumper came from Sunline. Sunline made the bumpers by design to bend away from the camper if the weight was too much and a bike is too much only held by the bumper.
John
