Generator?

I do a lot of camping off the grid and want to buy a generator. Will a honda 2000 run my air conditioner? I have a 1995 Sunline.

Our Honda 3000 will run the AC. Not sure if the 2000 would have enough umph.

2000 watts just isn’t enough some people have had limited success replacing the starting capacitor in the AC unit but as the outside temps climb the AC becomes harder to start. You may have a look at a Yamaha I think they make a 2400 watt small generator but even with the extra wattage it still might be a good ideal to replace the start cap.

Generator

Thanks for the info. I was going to try using two generators hooked together but thats two machines to maintain, keep in gas, and take up space in my garage. The honda 3000 looks like a good choice. I havent seen anybody using a yamaha yet.

Yamaha is a good brand they just don't seem to push them like Honda does they are just as quiet and are inverter generators. Yes a 2000 watt generator is fairly light but X2 they are close to the weight of a 3K Honda. A Honda 3K is sort of a back of the pickup generator not some thing you really want to move around much there are two different ones the insulated one is quieter than a 2K one but a good bit heaver. Champion makes a nice RV generator in the 3-4K range but they are not any where as quiet as an inverter unit but they also knew their market and have a 30 amp rv outlet yes so does some of the 2K Honda's but they won't make 30 amps so it's kind of a mote point.

I bought a Yamaha because it has a fuel shut-off valve. I'm a huge advocate of running a carb dry if you will not be starting the engine again for a long while. The shut off allows you to do that and store the genny fueled (with stabilizer). Full tank + empty carburetor = no gummed up carb but ready to go.

Generator

Thanks for the advice on the fuel shut off. I have been borrowing a buddy's champion 2000 and was lucky and cheap enough to run it out of gas before returning it. Sometimes being frugal has its rewards.

Honda is great, no doubt. BUT awelles3 makes a valid persuasive point. Ethanol has really put us on the alert. I won't buy a 2 cycle device anymore. We're fortunate to have a fuel station nearby that has 91 octane non-ethanol gas. I still run mine dry!!!

Tom says our Honda also has the fuel shut off valve and he uses it often. Just a FYI

They must've wised up. The Honda didn't have this feature on their 2000W model when I bought my Yamaha.

It appears the Honda EU3000is has fuel shut off valve, the EU2000i & EU2000c don't from what I see.

The Yamaha EF20000is has shut off value.

youtube has videos on DYI fuel bowl drains on Honda EU2000i's.

Got to be honest I have a small generator I use around the farm I never turn off the fuel I never put any thing in with the gas and leave it on a shelf in the garage and it never has failed to start same with all my small stuff. The only reason for a fuel shut off is for possible fuel leaks.

I bought a Predator super quiet inverter generator from Harbor Freight a few months ago. It runs my RV AC. Haven't used it for an extended period yet but it does keep the AC unit humming in my short term test. It is fairly quiet and inexpensive compared to the name brands. I cannot vouch for it's longevity yet but the reviews are good.

Very interesting unit there is a couple of things that make me wonder. The outlets say 15 amps max that's 1800 watts but the outlets are 20 amp designed (hard to say if they really are) A 20 amp outlet is rated for 2400 watts max and the generator is rated 2500 watts.

I was skeptical myself but while camping at a race last summer our neighbor had one and he swore by it. He showed me how it ran his ac unit although you couldn't have anything much else other than a light or 2 on at the same time. I always admired the Honda's but it seems if you didn't spend 2 grand on one you couldn't run your ac with it either. I have 2 Kawasaki genny's for 15yrs and while they have been so dependable for me, neither will run my rv ac. The breakers always trip on startup. The Predator.....no problem as of yet. It is easy to transport and quiet. So far my only gripe is the small fuel capacity. It only runs about 4hrs on 1/2 load so in the middle of the night it typically shuts down. I haven't found a way to add an auxillary fuel tank to it because the one built in holds pressure to act as a fuel pump to keep it running. If you remove the gas cap for a few seconds while the unit is running it loses the pressure and shuts down requiring a re-prime of the fuel system. Kind of an odd set up to me being an auto mechanic and having experience with many small engines for it to work that way instead of just a typical gravity feed system but none the less for the price it is a pretty nifty and useful unit for me.

My camper generator make no noise at all I don't even have to put gas in it, 100 watt solar panel. It does make enough power to run the Fantastic fan on low and still charge the batteries I don't have AC so a generator is nothing I need to take camping as long as the sun shines I can go indefinitely with two batteries running pumps, fan, lighting,TV and my radios.

Seeing how you hail from Maine, you may not require AC. it gets mighty hot and sticky here in PA hehe.

I'm in Maine because I hate hot humid weather! I'm from the Chesapeake bay area of Maryland!

Ideally you should figure out the total load that you are going to place on the Generator and allow 10-20 percent lee-way. This is so the Generator isn't operating at its max output all the time. Again I say "IDEALLY" because you and everyone knows this never happens.
