Yes, they are a poor design. On a 5 lug wheel the 3 tabs are never going to fall into a low spot so the tabs get smashed and accelerate the cracks. On 6 lug, you can rotate the hub so the 3 tabs...

Any chance of a pic on what yours look like?

Since you have a 1996 camper they may be the newer Dexter center hub cap and are available on line.

Do they look like this?
