Also, make sure the hot water tank doesn't go empty if you are running the electric element. It will burn out the heating element.

I believe the DSI fault deals with the propane...

I believe the DSI fault deals with the propane side of the hot water heater, not the electric. Make sure you have propane and it is turned on.
