rubber roof cleaning etc.

we just purchased a 1999 sunline model 2753 and would like to clean the rubber roof. I was told to clean it with tide with a little bleach added. after cleaning, use cool seal made for rubber roofs. is this the correct method?? also is it alright to walk on the roof to do this job?? sorry for all the questions, but we are new at all this and want to do the right thing.

Hi Again Mel,

DO NOT WALK ON THE ROOF!!!! The roof is not designed to be walked on. You could put pieces of plywood up there over the rafters, but I think your better off on a ladder since a lot of water will be involved and it could become slipery. It is good to seal the roof with a rubber roof sealer after cleaning. Hopefully someone else will have a better idea on what to use on it, because I have never been successful with finding a product that will get out all the spots. Only my 2363 had the rubber roof (the 2653 was my parents, I never owned it, though I would like to find it to do so). On my 1550 and 2251, those came with aluminum roofs (which I prefer).

I must point out you need to thoroughly inspect the roof for any defect, tear, wear spot, etc, before putting any water up there. I realize your '99 is newer than my '94, but I made that mistake and still regret it. I ended up having a few small tears in the back corners, so with the scrubbing and large volume of water from the water hose, it went through the tears, soaking the insulation and making the inside ceiling panel deformed. Sure, I could have left it, but for resale value (I was concerned because I was preparing to sell it) I had to replace it, which could be difficult now since Sunline is closed.

Please, keep the questions coming! I love to help out someone new. After all, it refreshes my memory on it all, which is a good thing.

We appreciate your replies, i guess this is what the forum is all about. we will certainly take your advice on not walking on the roof. as far as using a little bleach with the tide i guess will be ok.

Hi Mel,

I use 409 to clean the roof. I've used this on all three Sunlines we've owned. We starting using 409 when the people at the Sunline facture indicated it was an acceptable cleaning agent to use on the rubber roof.

I've found that 409 works just as good as those more expensive roof cleaners.

As Jon mentioned, if you need to get up on the roof, use plywood. I use plywood with carpet pieces attached to its bottom. The carpet adds some additional protection that the plywood doesn't damage the rubber roof when moving the plywood around.

i bought a 6 yo used sunline trailer in need of some tlc, the roof was nasty with mold, green stuff, etc, i fell for the $12 bottle of roof cleaner (on sale), i'll have to try the 409. i didn't have the guts to add my 220lbs to the roof, stayed on the ladder with a good pair of non slip shoes and used a medium brush attached to a long broom handle. worked down one half the roof from one side etc. w/excellent results
