The Running Away From Winter Tour

Hello, Everyone,

The website just popped up and wished me Happy Birthday, reminding me that I'm way past due posting about our long awaited trip.

Some of you remember that we retired last year, and this year starts what we hope to be a long series of trailer trips around the country.

Most of us had (are still having) a brutal Northern winter. We dug the Sunline out of the snow (about 8 inches), with the temperatures in the high 20's and hit the road on March 16, leaving the Saginaw area and headed straight south. After a brief stop to see family in Southern Indiana, we encountered sunny, 75 degree weather as we entered the Natchez Trace Parkway at Nashville. The weather and the spring scenery as we casually drove south was a wonderful, welcome relief from winter. Dogwoods were blooming everywhere.

A brief stopover at Pickwick Landing State Park, in Southern Tennessee, allowed us to visit the Shiloh battlefield, after which we continued to the Park Service's Jeff Busby campground, south of Tupelo, MS. There are three campgrounds on the Trace that are free of charge. However, the campground host that night had his hands full, as he managed to shoehorn about 28 rigs into 22 available spaces. Amazing what can be done, when its free!

We used the Timberlake RV Resort on Ross Barnett Resevoir, northeast of Jackson, MS, as our next stop. Very nice, well run campground; mostly permanent residents, but very clean and well managed. Call ahead for the best spots, as they tend to fill quickly. We used this location as our jump-off point to visit Vicksburg Battlefield Park.

Writing this from Vidalia, Louisiana, across the Mississippi from Natchez, MS. Excellant starting point to tour the Antebellum Homes of Natchez. Would also recommend this campground, the River View RV Park. It sits right on the banks of the Mississippi, in full view of traffic on the river. (However, tow boats and barges pass by all times of day and night. The river is NOT perfectly quiet.) Otherwise, the campground is full service, full hook-ups, laundry, pull-throughs, and both wireless and broadband internet are available.

We are two weeks into a 12-week trip. Corpus Christie, San Antonio, Santa Fe, Tucson, Grand Canyon, and the mountains of Colorado are on our itinerary. We will post again soon, for updates.

Here's hoping that the nasty winter weather in the north breaks soon. We ALL need a break. Happy Camping!

Dennis & Marie

Happy Birthday!

It sounds like you're having a great time and making the most of your retirement.

Usually gifts are given to the birthday person; but if you find time in your busy schedule, would you be willing to share your campground reviews in the Campground Reviews from a Sunline Owner's Perspective forum to help other members in their search for places to stay? You may even find a nice place to stay yourself from what others have posted.

Enjoy your trip and the warm weather!

Clueless:

Yes, a great idea. Needless to say, we will encounter several dozen on this trip. Will be glad to do it. Having extra time is what this trip is all about!

Standby for postings!!

In New Mexico you can buy a 12 month state park camping permit for $225.

21 day stay limit per site. $4 extra per day for electric.

Tweety and Larry,

Yes, we DO love photos and I do take lots of them. Trouble is, I need to read the instructions for posting photos. I will check that out, and try to post photos soon.

We will be in New Mexico for about 3 weeks. We'll check out the State Parks. We have heard that they are excellant. Thanks for the tips.
