Red face Rt. 88 to Ives Run

We've avoided Rt. 88 for years because it is so rough. We usually take I 90 and drop down and camp in the Finger Lakes area. This coming year, we hope to go from VT to Ives Run (PA) for a couple of days before Buttonwood. I 90 seems like drastically going out of our way to get to PA.

Has anyone traveled Rt. 88 recently? Is it still rough or have they resurfaced? And, if it is still bad, we'd consider getting off it and traveling Rt. 7 for a bit. Silly, I know, but it was really that bad (and we are used to Vermont's rough roads!) Where is the worst section of Rt. 88.. between which towns?

Any help appreciated !

Also, I asked Hutch and now forgot what he said .... which elec. sites are the best at Ives Run? Anyone else want to spend a couple of days camping there with us? Thinking Tues and Wed nights.

Bummer !

For anyone who doesn't know, this is a major highway. Someone in the club told me of losing their pop up years ago. It jumped around so much it tipped over on Rt. 88 and left them dealing with the mess on the side of the busy road !!

We were on that route in September on our way to Vermont. It is a horrible road and shook our diesel truck and 33 foot trailer until we thought we would go crazy. I would avoid that route.

Thanks all. I-90 is looking better all the time. Maybe we'll spend a night at a park on the Finger Lakes after all, before we head to Ive's Run. Keuka? Sampson? Both on our list, although we visited the museum at Sampson with friends, did not camp there as we were staying at a motel.

JohnB is on a distinguished road
Hi Debbie,

Sampson is a great park. We have stopped there a few times as a stop over coming out of the Adirondacks and heading back to Ohio. No problem getting in and out of those sites.

That said... the park road into camp...go slow. It is like black top aging over shifted concrete under it. Ka thump, ka thump... You are not wanting to go much over 10mph or else... Once you are in the actual campground, the roads are good. Just getting to the check in area. It is not as bad as SR 88 and yes we did that route a few years ago. My gosh...the bumps were so bad we had to go slow on the highway to not bounce the camper apart. They where resurfacing some of it, but there was at least a 10 mile or so stretch that was really bad... From your note, sounds like it is still that bad...

Have a good trip

John

Haven't camped at Keuka, but have at Sampson. Sampson is a very nice park.
As John mentioned sites are wide and easy to get into. Though many of the inside loop sites are at the wrong angle to make it hard angle to back into.

And definitely, 10mph TOPS when driving in the entrance, as John also mentioned.

Sampson would me my choice to brake up the trip.

Sampson is about 1 1/2 - 2 hrs from Ives Run depending on traffic and route taken. You could take Rt. 414 that angles down from Watkins Glen to Corning. I've never traveled on Rt. 414, which is a 2 lane country road but have hear from other's that it's not a bad road. The other option is Rt. 14, which is a State Road but that will get you onto I-86 farther east so it's longer as far as distance.

Last year did go to Sampson to avoid the dreaded Rt. 88. It was very nice, but we would love to go directly to Ive's Run ( we loved it there !) . Any improvement to Rt. 88 recently (please???)

Tom and Debbie,

We've stayed at both Sampson and Keuka Lake SP. Both are nice but, as noted, the road into Sampson is a bit rough and some of the sites can be hard to pull into. They have five camping loops, one loop (loop 5) which has sites on the lake but you'd want to reserve ahead on those sites. We liked Keuka Lake better. The Esperanza loop, has big sites which are easy to back into and have shelterbelts around the sites making it nice and private. I don't think you can go wrong with either one.

Thanks ! Good to see you ! At this point I think we will take rt. 88 directly to Ive's Run and have a good few nights there. Is anyone else thinking about a stop there before Buttonwood?

Last time I drove I-88 it was very very rough, rough enough that it'll shake your fillings out. I'm not sure if they've done any road work on it since then.

Maybe someone on here has driven I-88 in the last year and can update us on it's road condition.

It's definitely the most direct route from your place to Ives Run, but it could be a rough drive.

P.S. We would love to spend time with you guys at Ives Run, but unfortunately not all of us are retired. LOL

Hutch, made our reservations for Ives Run-4 days prior to Buttonwood. This time we did get our old fart's discount! Wow, half off the price ! Thanks for giving us the nudge last year, and very tactfully asking if we were "perhaps of an age to receive the discount". Gave us a good laugh that you were so careful in your wording ! Wish you and Mary could join us, but we will see you at Buttonwood !

We may add a couple of days at Letchworth, to see Ray and Lydia and then drop down from there. Thus avoiding 88 as a friend just came up it (via car) and said it is still rough.

We drive I-88 at least once a year in both directions in October. Generally we get on at Route 30A which is a bit north of Cobleskill and go all the way to Binghamton. Neither Gail nor I remember any rough sections from our last trip. They've been working on it regularly so if it's been more than a couple of years for any of you, it's in much better shape now.

Debbie, I came down I 87 to I 90 west to I 88 on my way to Fl towing the 5th wheel. I didn't think it was too bad, kept a steady 70 all way. Chuck

Interesting thread on Rt. 88 and those who think it is ok vs those who think it is awful. I wonder if the combo of TV and rig make a difference? Anyway, we decided to do I 90 again as we are making this a longer trip than originally planned. Now staying Fri. Sat at Keuka (thanks for info Matthew and Lisa) and then Ive's Run Sun. - Thurs and then on to Buttonwood. Is Keuka calm enough for kayaking? We never did feel comfortable going out on Seneca when we stayed at Sampson.

Deb, If you are staying at Keuka Lake State Park, you will leave the campground and get back on Route 54A and come back into Penn Yan which is a 15 minute drive and you turn right at the light and go to your 2nd light and turn right and that is Route 54 which is will take you on the east side of the lake and that takes you to Bath NY and you get on 86 there..Nice drive down the lake Road.

I enjoy Ives Run but prefer Cowanesque, also a COE park, in Lawenceville PA, just off rt. 15 about 12 miles before Ives....take a night and enjoy this beautiful park and lake, wooded or open sites, also full hkups lakeside. I personally like it better and like the town being only about 4 mi.away for needed items. JMO of course! I have not missed a visit there in ten years until the past summer.
