1979 sun spot remodel

should I keep the inside the same? or should i change it up? It looks now to be all stock.and i think i would like to keep it the same, I'm talking about things like the Refrigerator. It works on a/c but I don't know if it works on gas. was thinking about putting a new little elc. one in. Can yall give me some thoughts on what to do.

Sometimes you do have to replace things like a refrigerator, but if you can rebuild/replace the inner workings of it (which is possible), I'd go that route to keep the original look.

Just don't put an electric only dorm type refrigerator in. I can't stand those, as it's tacky, not practical, far from original, and I could go on.

I agree with you on the fridge..

With it working on A/C, that means it would/could work on LP. It would be a matter of getting the LP burner assembly working.

Guys I have to disagree on the refrigerator replacement deal here. My Dometic was rusted out, damaged, and stank to high heaven when I bought my trailer. I was low on cash and had 50 other things that needed work on the trailer as well as the need to do something about the fridge. I was fortunate to have this forum for advice on all 50 or so of those things, and got advice on how to replace the fridge as well.

I think it really depends on several factors regarding what you choose to replace the original refrigerator. One factor is how you plan to use the trailer. In my case, I'm permanently situated, and have no need for the LP option. For those who are mobile, a big consideration is whether you plan to camp outside the environs of a campsite with electric service. Yet another is the cost factor of replacing an LP/AC
versus all electric. While I haven't priced them lately, I know a dorm refrigerator is a heck of a lot cheaper than an RV refrigerator. ( I got mine free from a friend, so it was a no brainer for me.) I also think that depending on your carpentry skills, or a friend's skills, perhaps, you can replace a Sunline factory install refrigerator so that to me it doesn't look tacky at all; it looks pretty darn good and serves me well. ( I posted somewhere on this forum pictures from my install of a dorm fridge, and while it may not win me carpenter of the year honors, it suits me fine.)

mrcamper, welcome to SOC and congratulations on your Sunspot.

If a rare find like a Sunspot was mine, I'd definitely want to keep it as original as possible.

I would try to repair or find another refrigerator capable of operating on LP as you (or maybe a future owner) may not always have electricity available. That being said, I found Drake's pictures here in posts # 6 and 8. This thread also has pics. This is Drake's first thread about removing the original refrigerator although it doesn't include any pictures.

Clueless...you are correct in wanting to keep it as original as possible...had I the money, at the time, I would have considered it, however, the point I was trying to make in this thread is that sometimes, what a person would like to do and what they are able to do, or what suits their own purpose, or what makes the person happy is not always the right choice in the eyes of others.

Drake, understood. When I said "as possible", I was thinking of the availability of both parts and finances as the possibilities - I should have been more clear. I understand the difficulties of both scenarios.

Thanks guys, I think i'm going to go back original. It might take me a while but it is a project for me. I got it all stripped down, i'm pulling the floor out right now. and i'm taking pic's of ever thing. Thanks again, I hope i can count on yall for info when i start putting it back together.

Keep the gas one then you can go any where. If it works on electric the rest is easy most likely a good cleaning of the burner will fix it right up.

If it works on electric, this means the cooling coil is still good which is the major part of the fridge. The gas part is not that bad to fix. The older ones even have less parts then the new ones... I would get the LP side fixed before changing it out to a dorm fridge.

Now that I think about it, I think the Sunspots were unique in that I think they had a three way refrigerator in them (gas, 120v electric, and 12v electric). A big plus!

I'm for keeping the RV Fridge. Those little dorm room refrigerators hum and vibrate. I can't imagine trying to sleep in a Sun Spot with one. If you have ever slept in a hotel room with a fridge you know what I mean.
