On our way to Maine last year we stayed at Beach Rose in Salsbury Beach, MA. It's not right on the beach, but we rode the bike path about 2 miles to the beach at Salsbury Beach State Reservation. You can camp at the Reservation, but I hear it's very difficult to get a spot, and it's right out in the open and right at the beach. We prefered Beach Rose with it's nice heated pool and ice cream stand next door The sites are small, but the owners are really nice, and the pool is cleaner and warmer than ours at home.

Makers Mark
Two of my favorites:

In CT, no hookups but great beach location. Be sure to visit Leany and Joes for seafood.

In RI, not right on the beach but a bike ride away from two state beaches and Block Island Ferry. Be sure to vist Iggy's for some "choda" and "dough boys".

Why do I associate all my favorite campgrounds with FOOD!
MM

PS Both would need reservations well in advance.

I stayed a Salisbury in April, all the sites are out in the open and fairly small. They offer Water and electric a dump station 3 bathhouses 2 of them with free showers. the entire place is right on the water with a large public beach area. there is a store in the peak season. and LOW price.

Oceanfront Camping in Connecticut or Massachusetts

We second Makers Mark with Hammonasset Beach State Park in CT. Probably the crown jewel of CT state parks. It's like a home base for us.

Not really the ocean, but it is on Long Island Sound with really nice beaches that are not overcrowded. Sites have no hook-ups and are mostly open on grass, but there are some shaded areas too and water is usually within reach if you bring extra hose. The entire campground is clean and well patrolled.

Mystic Seaport is about 45 minutes away as are the Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods casinos.

Fisherman's Memorial is RI is also worth the trip. And it has hook-ups.

Lot's of good eats in the area and you can also take the ferry over to Block Island for a day trip. You can also spend a day in Newport touring the mansions of the gilded age or doing the Cliff Walk.

Either one is a good choice, but if you have the time, try to stay at both.
