New Jersey & Delaware Suggestions

Hi All,

We’re going to be spending some time at the Jersey Shores (Cape May area / Lake Laurie Campground) and Delaware (Rehoboth – Big Oaks Campground).

Anyone have tips, suggestions, etc. on what to do, not to do, must see, stay away from, etc.

Thanks
Hutch

Hey Hutch,
I am responding, but I am not going to be much help. Spent a lot of time in my "youth" at Jersey Shore, but was night time surf fishing never camped. I like the blue fishing and winter fluke and whiting!!

Last spring however we stayed in Delaware at the the DE Seashore State Park. We liked it, but heavy bridge construction along the side spoiled some of the ambience. We like Rehoboth and Dewey Beach very much. Also stayed in MD at Assateague State Park and did a lot of biking and watching the wild ponies, very nice but buggie. (see sig pic) We stayed in the State park because they had a limited number of sites with electric hook-up. The National Park has many sites with no hook-ups. We liked the DE and MD seashore very much.
I know, not much help,
Jay

Hutch:

Don't know anything about the Jersy Side, but......

In Rehobeth you'll be at the top of Coastal Highway (aka Rt. 1. in Del and RT. 589 in MD) Going south you'll find Dewey Beach, the Indian River Inlet (aka the bridge construction MM refered to), Bethany Beach, Fenwick Island, Ocean City, MD, a quick cut out onto US 50, and south on MD 611 to Assateague Island. Total top to bottom about 40 miles.

There are Boardwalks in Rehobeth, Bethany, and Ocean City. Rehobeth and Bethany are quainter and quieter, but OC is by far the largest (and I would probably avoid on the weekends), all are fun walks. There are a couple of interesting places to see in Lewes (pron. Lewis!! just north of Rehobeth. The area between Dewey and Bethany is pretty much all the Delaware Seashore Park, interesting lookout towers along this stretch, leftover from WW II. There is a small lighthouse in Fenwick that is occasionally open for tours. Assateague is worth the trip to see the free roaming ponies (the decendants of Misty of Chincoteague fame). Bugs can be a problem Okay, at times they fly in squadrons and can carry off a full size pony, but it still a fun place to visit.

If fishing is your thing, there are fleets in Lewes that go into Delaware Bay and Ocean City that go into the Atlantic and the Back Bays of OC. Catching a headboat out of OC for Flounder in the bay is fun. Not to mention really good eats!! Usually run about 4 hour trips.

Check out http://<a href="http://www.ococean.c...cocean.com</a> for Ocean City Info and a Calendar of Events. http://<a href="http://www.rehobeth....hobeth.com</a> for Rehobeth Info and Calendar of Events.

OK, I'll shut up......my parents had a trailer in Fenwick Island for around 15 years so the area is sort of my second backyard.

P.S. We'll be at Frontiertown Campground on Rt. 611 the weekend of July 18-20,

George & Jay,

Thanks for the replies. Maybe we can talk more at the M&G in a few weeks.

I would also be interested if you have any suggestions on what would be the best route to head home from Rehoboth, DE. (i.e., through DE and around Philly) to get to 476 (PA Turnpike) to head north to I-81.

See you both in a few weeks.

RT.1N to RT. 113N (they merge together at Milford) to Dover, then take Route 1N. Route 1 is controlled access and toll. The toll for 4 axles is $8.00 from Dover Air Force Base (southern most entrance) to I-95. You could take Rt. 13 to avoid the toll as it is mostly dual lane, but it is local i.e. goes through most towns, so you will make better time on Rt. 1. At Christinana you can head up I-95N to I-476N.

You certainly will want to take route 1 instead of 13. I work right off 13, and have been all the way down it on a few occasions. Route 1 is the clear winner for travel..

Wish I could give you some suggestions, but we haven't been anywhere yet

George & Frank,

Thanks for the advice and directions.

I appreciate your help.

It's always nice to get confirmation of the route from people that know the area.
Thanks

All I know is from personal experience, the Garden State Parkway, with a TT is pure torture. People cut in and out and aren't forgiving for those who aren't really sure where to go.

They especially aren't forgiving to those who are only doing 60 and don't have the Dual Cams adjusted exactly right, causing the trailer to track with the rear end off center a little bit. Gee, this sounds familiar!!! Oh yeah, don't take the SB instead of NB by accident when getting on, or they'll charge you tolls before you can get turned around again. The toll roads aren't anything like PA or OH, where you pay first and then decide where you're going. Those same people from the Parkway are the ones who don't want to let you get a trailer completely through a round-about.

As for coming back, it looks like going up to 42 is your best bet. It looks like the direct roads coming from Cape May are small, and since they go by a State Forest, I'd say the roads are curvy. I've never been there to have personal knowledge, but based on the features around, I'd stay away. As for Philly, I'd just go through it on 76. Unless you want to ring a bell, it looks like you'd spend more time trying to go around the whole city than to just deal with the traffic. If you planned to pull out of Cape May say around 11:00, you'd hit Philly just about 1:00 when traffic should be lighter.

Lastly, even though my memory doesn't recall anything about the actual road condition of the GS parkway, my handwritten directions that I wrote while on there show that there were many, many bumps. And I thought MI roads were bad!

My father used to have a beach house in OCMD and the route he always drove was Rt 1 North to Rt 7, Rt 7 to Rt 41, Rt 41 to 30W into Lancaster... we headed to Carlisle from there but 501 out of Lancaster will take you north to Spring Grove where you can get back onto 81.

I'm not sure how much you want to 'make time' and stay on the 2 lane highway... if this is the case I'd probably take a different route. We made the drive with a 24' pontoon boat in tow.

The area down there is nice. There's both great attractions on either the ocean or bay side. Lots of decent peaceful beaches in Dewey/Slaughter. If you want the 'boardwalk life' then OCMD is the place to visit. If you head northwest the countryside in the Cheasapeake Bay Watershed an overlooked attraction... cool wildlife. And just a little more north for Amish Country.

Enjoy!
Take care,
Jason

Jon:

Rte 47 to 347 to 55 is actually a nice drive. The 347 loop through the state park is quicker and more scenic than staying on 47 without the curves that concerned you. While they are secondary roads, you miss the tolls and the white-knuckle drive through Philadelphia. I avoid the Schuylkill Expressway (I-76, aka Sure Kill Expressway) at all cost except on Sunday morning when you may experience reduced traffic. Come into PA south of Philadelphia and pick up the PA Turnpike at the Philadelphia or Valley Forge exits.

Al,

What's your suggested alternative route instead of I-76 south through Philly into NJ?
Is it I-496 to I-95 to 322 into NJ to 55 and then 47/347 to Cap May area?

Thanks
Hutch

Hutch:

We stay at Holly Shores when we go to Cape May. The owner gave me this route as an alternative to Philadelphia:

I-476 South to I-95
I-95 South to I-295
I-295 East to the Delaware Memorial Bridge
Exiit 2 to New Jersey Turnpike
Exit 1 to Route 40 East
Rte 40 East to Rte 55
Rte 55 South to Rte 47
Rte 47 South to 347 South back to 47 South
Continue on 47 South to Rio Grande

Once you are in Rio Grande, there are two major roads into Cape May. Your campground's website should help you choose either Rte 9 or the other option.

Al,

Thanks for the directions.

We’re camping at Lake Laurie, just south of Rio Grande on Rt. 9.

The mapping programs I have & our Garmin (in truck mode) routed me down the Atlantic City Expressway and the Garden City Parkway.

Have you taken this route before?
Do you think this route is just as fast or faster than the Atlantic City Expressway and the Garden City Parkway?
How are the roads through NJ?
What’s the availability of gas stations with diesel and room for a trailer?

We can talk at the M&G in a few weeks.

Thanks again for your help and suggestions.
See you in a few weeks.
Hutch

Hutch:

I have gone both ways. Ever since I received the directions from the campground, I have not used the toll roads. The roads were decent the last time we went on the secondary roads: As I remember, there is a little bounce on Rte 47 from expansion joints, but not too annoying. The traffic on the A/C Expressway and the Garden State Parkway moves at a fast pace - sometimes faster than you might like while towing a TT. My objection to this route is the Schuylkill Expressway between the PA Turnpike and the A/C Expressway. It is a white-knuckle trip with crazy drivers and panick stops: Also, last minute lane changes are difficult if you aren't familiar with the ramps. As I said before, Sundays aren't too bad because there is no commuter traffic.

When you consider the heavy traffic and the extra miles, I think you make similar time with less stress going the secondary roads. If you decide to take the A/C Expressway and the Parkway, go all the way to exit "0". It is at the junction with Rte 9 to your campground and you used to be able to avoid the last toll by going to the end of the Parkway.

I called Dave Robinson at Holly Shores. He said it would be quicker for you to take a route similar to your earlier post: 476 to 95 to 322 (via the Commodore Barry Bridge) to 55 to 47 to 347 back to 47 to 9. Also, he verified that all of these roads are in very good condition. He used to commute this route daily back to PA when they first purchased the campground.

Hutch,
I live here in the Garden State about 15min from Phila. I am picking up my 1st Sunliner tomarow about 30 miles north of Cape May. If you are comming down the PA TP Take it to 496 to 195n to 322 east to 40 to 47 I belive someone suggested this route. You will have no tolls. Only thing the 322 bridge is a good incline ( Comadore Barry ) You should not have any issues with it. But like the others Stay off the Sure Kll 76 thru Phila. When you are in Cape May see the Lighthouse. Also there is Some great fishing ( Deep Sea ) if your into it. There is a Ferry that will take you to Del. Might be $$$
Of course AC is only 1hr north but if you don't see it your not missing much! Have a good trip - Try our Tomatoes and corn if you are here after July 1st / They should be ready by then! Ron
